{"id":398228,"date":"2025-09-04T21:11:24","date_gmt":"2025-09-04T21:11:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/398228\/"},"modified":"2025-09-04T21:11:24","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T21:11:24","slug":"manchester-city-centre-set-to-expand-into-six-new-areas-as-council-redraws-map","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/398228\/","title":{"rendered":"Manchester city centre set to expand into six new areas as council redraws map"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>But there will be an island of non-city centre specifically<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_JRP_MEN_030925_city2025_006JPG.jpg\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Notably, the plan cannot cover parts of the existing city centre (right of the river) around Chapel Street as that falls under Salford council control(Image: Jason Roberts \/Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The city centre will expand into areas like Hulme, Ardwick, and Strangeways under new council plans to redraw its boundaries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Manchester council released its draft local plan on Wednesday (September 3), the first update of the legally-required development blueprint since 2012.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In the 205-page document, town hall chiefs revealed they plan to redraw city centre boundaries \u2018to ensure its footprint can capitalise on its potential\u2019 and \u2018remain the UK\u2019s most significant economic driver outside of London, enabling further economic and employment growth\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">To see planning applications; traffic and road diversions and layout changes; and more, visit the Public Notices Portal <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/publicnoticeportal.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"HERELink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">HERE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Newly-added areas to the city centre include parts of Ardwick, swathes of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/cheetham-hill\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Cheetham Hill<\/a>, most of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/hulme\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Hulme<\/a>, and all of Ancoats and New Islington.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Authority bosses say the new borders reflect existing and planned development.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_JScTe-manchester-s-expanding-city-centre-3.png\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The old city centre (grey) lined up paired with newly added-areas (red) and the island of non-city centre (white)(Image: Reach Data Unit)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThe city centre has gone through a huge resurgence since the 1980s, providing around 10pc of all jobs in Greater Manchester, over 13,000 new residential units since 2010 and it has an estimated population of 100,000,\u201d the draft local plan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cAs the city centre has grown, finding further space within existing boundaries to enable the scale of development which is needed to support economic growth can be challenging. The city centre expansion into the fringe areas had been taking place for some time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThe areas of Ancoats and New Islington have become its new suburbs, with other areas identified for further high density development. To reflect this, it is proposed to extend the City Centre boundary into the areas of Ancoats and New Islington, Strangeways, Victoria North and Manchester Science Park to accommodate city centre growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Interestingly, a small island of non-city centre will exist in Hulme, which is the Aquarius Estate, where no further development is planned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">While the council says it\u2019s following existing development trends, the changes also mean it\u2019s easier for office blocks to be built in fringe areas, as part of \u2018mixed use\u2019 development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The plan goes on: \u201c[The city centre will] make provision for homes as part of mixed use schemes. Proposals without employment opportunities will be the exception and must have a clear justification.
