{"id":398255,"date":"2025-09-04T21:25:24","date_gmt":"2025-09-04T21:25:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/398255\/"},"modified":"2025-09-04T21:25:24","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T21:25:24","slug":"carney-says-canada-will-join-military-assistance-pledge-for-ukraine-national","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/398255\/","title":{"rendered":"Carney says Canada will join \u2018military assistance\u2019 pledge for Ukraine &#8211; National"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Prime Minister Mark Carney\u2019s office says he told Ukraine\u2019s allies today that Canada is willing to deploy \u201cdirect and scalable military assistance\u201d in a post-ceasefire <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/?s=Ukraine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ukraine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Prime Minister\u2019s Office says Carney took part virtually in a meeting of the pro-Ukraine \u201cCoalition of the Willing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It says Carney affirmed Canada\u2019s commitment to the coalition and its willingness to provide military support for a ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p>Following today\u2019s coalition meeting, French President Emmanuel Macron said 26 of Ukraine\u2019s allies have pledged to deploy a \u201creassurance force\u201d once the war with Russia ends with a peace agreement or ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p>Macron said the countries committed to deploying troops in Ukraine, or maintaining a presence on land, at sea, or in the air.<\/p>\n<p>Experts have said committing Canadian troops to Ukraine likely would mean shutting down Canada\u2019s Latvia mission, which <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11350732\/canada-latvia-nato-military-mission-extended-carney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carney recently announced would be extended to 2029.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Earlier Thursday, Macron and other European leaders met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the the U.S. envoy for peace talks, Steve Witkoff, to discuss ways of ensuring long-term military support and continued American backing for Ukraine once the conflict ends. Zelenskyy\u2019s office said he also held a closed-door meeting with Witkoff.<\/p>\n<p>The European leaders \u2014 some of whom joined the meeting virtually \u2014 said <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/?s=Russia+Ukraine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russia<\/a> must now work toward ending the fighting, and the German government suggested European sanctions on Russia would increase if Moscow drags its feet. They spoke with Trump over the phone after the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey expressed the hope that the United States would continue to make a substantial contribution to the joint efforts to support Ukraine, formulate security guarantees, and shape a productive diplomatic process,\u201d German government spokesman Stefan Kornelius said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who attended virtually, laid out three \u201careas of action,\u201d including working toward a summit that would include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and \u201ca ceasefire must be agreed there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the Russian side continues to play for time, Europe will increase the pressure of sanctions to increase the chances of a diplomatic solution,\u201d the statement said.<br \/>Positive signals<\/p>\n<p>In a policy shift earlier this month, the U.S. sent positive signals over its readiness to support security guarantees for Ukraine that resemble NATO\u2019s collective defense mandate, Zelenskyy said. It is unclear what that support would look like in practice. Ukraine is hoping for continued U.S. intelligence sharing and air support.<\/p>\n<p>NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, who attended the meeting virtually, said that a broad coalition of nations is needed to support Ukraine\u2019s defense against Russian aggression, but also to strengthen Europe to deter further military action by Moscow.<\/p>\n<p>Citing European military and intelligence officials who have warned of Russian plans to strike other European countries, Rutte said that \u201cwe have to make sure that our deterrence is such that they will never try, knowing that our reaction will be devastating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rutte also called for the world to \u201cnot be naive about Russia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know what Putin tries to do and and the evidence is there in Ukraine as we speak,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in Ukraine, Russia fired 112 strike and decoy drones across the country overnight Thursday, according to Ukraine\u2019s Air Force morning report.
