Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore has slammed Manchester United<\/a>‘s transfer business this summer for missing out on key areas during their squad rebuild.<\/p>\n

The Reds spent around \u00a3215million on transfers this summer – signing Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo<\/a>, Diego Leon, Benjamin Sesko<\/a> and Senne Lammens. In terms of departures, around \u00a368m was raised on the sales of Antony and Alejandro Garnacho while a loan fee was received for Rasmus Hojlund.<\/p>\n

United’s new signings have got off to a mixed start under Ruben Amorim. Cunha and Mbeumo have impressed at times, but Sesko has yet to score after four games for the Reds<\/a>, although he is yet to start in the Premier League<\/a> for Amorim’s team in the early days of 2025\/26.<\/p>\n

One transfer decision which raised eyebrows this summer was not going for former PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who ended up joining rivals Manchester City<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And Collymore has questioned United’s summer business – raising doubts over Lammens and why certain areas were not addressed in Amorim’s squad.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m surprised that Man United didn\u2019t throw their hat in the ring for Donnarumma,” he told Caughtoffside<\/a>. “A winner, an excellent shot stopper, a good marshaller of a defence. In terms of Lammens, who knows?<\/p>\n

“With goalkeepers that haven\u2019t been tested at elite level \u2013 and the Belgian league isn\u2019t elite level \u2013 it is that it\u2019s a toss of a coin. In terms of the Emi Martinez scenario\u2026 do I think he would have been a good goalkeeper for them? Yes, I do, I also think Donnarumma would have been a very good goalkeeper for Man United, considering this type of goalkeeper that they\u2019ve brought in.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, there\u2019s nothing that suggested that I was wrong in this column several weeks ago by saying just because they\u2019ve brought in Cunha and Mbeumo and Sesko, that\u2019s all their problems solved. There is a defensive problem there.<\/p>\n

“There is a creative problem there. The three attacking players\u2026 You buy at the end of the project of buying defenders, a goalkeeper and a midfielder, not putting the cart before the horse.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure Manchester United<\/a> will be entertaining. But I think the notion that the defence and a rookie goalkeeper is going to perform better than last season is far from guaranteed.\u201d<\/p>\n
