We cannot do what we do without your support.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>A bison has caused alarm after being spotted wandering through a village in western Poland and munching on garden plants outside a house, having escaped from a nearby enclosure.<\/p>\n<p>The animal, named Pojar, is believed to have broken free overnight before being seen early in the morning near D\u0119bowa Street in Tulce on the outskirts of the city of Pozna\u0144, the Babki Forest District announced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEarly this morning, the police contacted us with a request for help regarding a bison,\u201d they wrote on Facebook, later sharing a video of the animal chewing on decorative trees between two houses.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"pl\" dir=\"ltr\">Pod Poznaniem \u017cubr pa\u0142aszuje tuje. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/vSK8uI1nCB\">pic.twitter.com\/vSK8uI1nCB<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Codziennik z Mordoru (@mordownik4u) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mordownik4u\/status\/1963199133633634811?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">September 3, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>After the animal had been spotted, a veterinarian was called to the scene and sedated the bison before it was transported back to its owner, foresters said.<\/p>\n<p>Local broadcaster TVP3 reports that officials are now investigating how the animal escaped from the private enclosure.<\/p>\n<p>Police said the bison remained calm throughout the incident. \u201cIt did not cause any damage. No one was injured,\u201d officer Anna Kl\u00f3j told broadcaster TVN.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Bison \u2013 an iconic and protected species in Poland \u2013 were hunted to extinction in the wild in Poland by the early 20th century. But a <a href=\"https:\/\/notesfrompoland.com\/2021\/01\/10\/polands-bison-removed-from-endangered-list-but-16-bird-species-have-disappeared-from-the-country\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">successful breeding programme<\/a> has resulted in the country now having a quarter of the world\u2019s population of European bison.<\/p>\n<p>That led the International Union for Conservation of Nature in 2021 to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/notesfrompoland.com\/2021\/01\/10\/polands-bison-removed-from-endangered-list-but-16-bird-species-have-disappeared-from-the-country\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">upgrade the European bison from \u201cvulnerable\u201d to \u201cnear threatened\u201d<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 which means it is no longer at risk of global extinction \u2013 on its\u00a0Red List of Threatened Species.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of 2021, Poland\u2019s bison population counted 2,429 individuals, including 206 living in captivity. The country has eight free-ranging populations, located mainly in forested areas across eastern and northeastern Poland, as well as some western regions.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, Polish media reported<a href=\"https:\/\/notesfrompoland.com\/2023\/12\/04\/two-bison-killed-in-collision-with-polish-army-truck-following-similar-incident-last-month\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> several cases of bison being killed in collisions with army vehicles<\/a>.
