{"id":399574,"date":"2025-09-05T09:04:19","date_gmt":"2025-09-05T09:04:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/399574\/"},"modified":"2025-09-05T09:04:19","modified_gmt":"2025-09-05T09:04:19","slug":"heads-its-awkward-tails-its-awkward-for-the-prime-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/399574\/","title":{"rendered":"Heads it&#8217;s awkward, tails it&#8217;s awkward for the prime minister"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">It feels like crunch time for Angela Rayner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Plenty of folk at Westminster reckon today is the day her fate will be determined.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The prime minister told me yesterday he expected the investigation by the independent adviser on ministerial standards to be quick and he thought that was a good thing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">That suggests Sir Keir won&#8217;t prevaricate in offering his own judgement about Sir Laurie Magnus&#8217;s findings once he himself has them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">As ever, there is always scope for unforeseen wrinkles or unrelated stuff that pushes things back a bit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Does the prime minister want to do a wider reshuffle at the same time?<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Aside from the timing, this is a &#8216;heads it&#8217;s awkward, tails it&#8217;s awkward&#8217; situation for the prime minister.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">If Sir Laurie&#8217;s report left scope for the deputy prime minister to stay on, it&#8217;s not an easy argument to make after all the revelations of recent days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">But if she goes, as most I talk to now think is more likely, there are then two big questions: who replaces her and what does she do next?<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Does Rayner remain deputy leader of the Labour Party, a position she was elected to by party members, even if she is no longer deputy prime minister and housing secretary?<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">If she resigns as the party&#8217;s deputy leader, a contest to replace her would begin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">When I spoke to Sir Keir in Glasgow on Thursday, he was talking up a <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cr5rgdpvn63o\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a310bn deal to sell warships to Norway<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">He talked with an enthusiasm about digital ID cards I had never heard before as a potential tool for tackling illegal immigration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">He also talked about tweaks to the implications of the European Convention on Human Rights he&#8217;s determined to push through.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">But all of this, inevitably, generates fewer headlines than the conduct of his deputy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">All told, this is not exactly the start he wanted to what the prime minister described as the beginning of &#8220;phase two&#8221; of his government at the beginning of the week.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"It feels like crunch time for Angela Rayner.
