finalise a move for Manchester City youngster Jaden Heskey on deadline day.

It was reported by Pete O’Rourke that the Owls’ proposal had not been granted permission by the EFL, who have placed the club’s spending under review.

The Yorkshire outfit were able to sign Harry Amass on loan from Manchester United, but couldn’t complete a deal for the midfielder.

This has come as a blow to Henrik Pedersen’s side, who have lost a number of key players since the end of last season due to significant financial issues.

Jaden Heskey transfer claim after failed Sheffield Wednesday move

When asked about the EFL’s decision to deny the club the chance to sign Heskey, FLW’s Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit Patrick McKenna claimed they made the right call.

He believes this will put further pressure on Dejphon Chansiri to sell his stake in the Yorkshire outfit, and that he’s not shown he can run the team sustainably so new costs shouldn’t be allowed.

“In regards to the EFL ruling over Jaden Heskey, I do actually agree with the stance they have taken,” McKenna told Football League World.

“And outside the fans who are disappointed by this and feel that we should be able to bring him in, essentially this is more short-term pain for long-term gain.

“Now, I know we’ve had a horrendous amount of short-term and long-term pain, but this EFL ruling really puts the pressure further on Dejphon Chansiri.

“The man is trying to hold onto the club, refusing to sell, and obviously this is frustrating the EFL, who want him out of town.

“So, I get their logic.

“Chansiri has proven he is unable to fund the club in any sort of sustainable manner, so if he is consistently struggling with bills, such as playing and non-playing staff, why should he be able to bring in new players?

“Okay, they won’t be more than minimal costs to them, but there are still costs there, and if he cannot prove that he can make these costs then there’s no logic in letting him sign new players.

“So, with this here, I’m not going to take my anger and disappointment out on the EFL, I’m going to keep it focussed on the one man who has caused the ridiculous situation where we can’t even sign a young player on loan where the parent club is willing to pay all the wages.

“This has been an absolutely disastrous transfer window, and yesterday was almost like a further reminder of how bad things are.

“But the EFL did not do this just to get at Wednesday and to annoy our fanbase, they are making it harder and harder for Chansiri to operate.

“And hopefully that will help push him out the door.”

Sheffield Wednesday have earned just one point from their opening four fixtures, leaving them 23rd in the Championship table going into the September international break.

Sheffield Wednesday need takeover action quickly

The arrival of Amass was a positive step forward, but the failure to bring in Heskey is another reminder that the only way past this mess is with a change in ownership.

Chansiri has shown in the last few months that he is incapable of adequately maintaining Sheffield Wednesday’s finances, so it’s no surprise the EFL have taken this view on the deal with Man City.

Supporters will be hoping that a takeover can be agreed quickly, and maybe some free agents could then be brought in to strengthen Pedersen’s side.

But, as things stand, this squad will struggle to compete in the Championship this year and there’s nobody to blame but Chansiri.

This article is part of Football League World’s ‘Terrace Talk’
