{"id":40083,"date":"2025-04-22T04:06:10","date_gmt":"2025-04-22T04:06:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/40083\/"},"modified":"2025-04-22T04:06:10","modified_gmt":"2025-04-22T04:06:10","slug":"indias-modi-and-u-s-vice-president-vance-optimistic-on-trade-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/40083\/","title":{"rendered":"India&#8217;s Modi and U.S. Vice President Vance optimistic on trade deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi meets U.S. Vice President JD Vance and his family at his residence in New Delhi, India, on April 21, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Anadolu | Anadolu | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>India&#8217;s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. Vice President JD Vance on Monday hailed the &#8220;significant&#8221; progress made in trade talks between the two sides during Vance&#8217;s visit to India.<\/p>\n<p>Vance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/india\/indias-modi-host-jd-vance-delhi-under-us-tariffs-shadow-2025-04-21\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">who was in India<\/a> on a mostly personal trip with second lady Usha Vance and his family, met Modi in New Delhi.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pmindia.gov.in\/en\/news_updates\/pm-hosts-the-u-s-vice-president-and-family\/?comment=disable\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A statement from Modi&#8217;s office<\/a> said the two leaders &#8220;welcomed the significant progress in the negotiations for a mutually beneficial India-U.S. Bilateral Trade Agreement.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Vance and Modi also reviewed and positively assessed the progress in various areas of bilateral cooperation, and noted &#8220;continued efforts&#8221; in enhancing cooperation in areas like energy, defense and strategic technologies.<\/p>\n<p>The two leaders also exchanged views on various regional and global issues of mutual interest, and called for dialogue and diplomacy.<\/p>\n<p>India was hit with a 26% &#8220;reciprocal&#8221; tariff on April 2, before the levies were suspended for 90 days by U.S. President Donald Trump on April 9, leaving a 10% baseline tariff.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, <a href=\"https:\/\/ustr.gov\/about\/policy-offices\/press-office\/press-releases\/2025\/april\/ambassador-greer-issues-statement-trade-negotiation-progress-india\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said<\/a> the USTR and India&#8217;s Ministry of Commerce and Industry have &#8220;finalized the terms of reference to lay down a roadmap for the negotiations on reciprocal trade.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He added, &#8220;there is a serious lack of reciprocity in the trade relationship with India,&#8221; but said &#8220;India&#8217;s constructive engagement so far has been welcomed and I look forward to creating new opportunities for workers, farmers, and entrepreneurs in both countries.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/02\/14\/us-india-to-boost-bilateral-trade-to-500-billion-by-2030-modi-says-.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Back in February,<\/a> Modi and Trump had agreed to more than double bilateral trade between New Delhi and Washington to $500 billion by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. total goods trade with India is estimated at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ustr.gov\/countries-regions\/south-central-asia\/india\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$129 billion in 2024<\/a>, according to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.
