{"id":40097,"date":"2025-04-22T04:14:08","date_gmt":"2025-04-22T04:14:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/40097\/"},"modified":"2025-04-22T04:14:08","modified_gmt":"2025-04-22T04:14:08","slug":"trumps-tariff-war-empowers-europes-free-traders-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/40097\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump\u2019s tariff war empowers Europe\u2019s free traders \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cTrump\u2019s policy will lead everyone to agree to develop trade relationships with the rest of the world and therefore also further increase the number of free-trade agreements,\u201d said Jean-Luc Demarty, who headed the Commission\u2019s trade department during the first Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, EU countries such as France, Belgium or Austria, which once dragged their feet on opening up their sensitive markets, are starting to see deals as a geopolitical necessity \u2014 not just an economic bonus.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A case in point is France, whose entire political class had rejected the EU-Mercosur trade deal as politically and economically toxic, but which is now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/donald-trump-pushes-france-reassess-trade-alternatives-mercosur-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quietly softening its stance<\/a> in light of Trump\u2019s trade offensive.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t make sense to remain fixated on Mercosur, which was negotiated on good terms overall,\u201d said Marie-Pierre Vedrenne, a liberal member of the European Parliament who hails from the same Modem party as Prime Minister Fran\u00e7ois Bayrou.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to change our mindset, otherwise we&#8217;ll miss out on the advancement of the world,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>The transatlantic trade relationship is Europe\u2019s biggest, with two-way commerce totaling \u20ac1.6 trillion. The U.K., China and Switzerland come next.
