The\u00a0South Kissing\u00a0filly from\u00a0Haras Masama\u00a0made a bold statement on turf to join the ranks of the top sprinters<\/strong><\/p>\n

La Gran Furtiva\u00a0was unstoppable in the\u00a0Cl\u00e1sico Condesa<\/strong> <\/strong>\/ JUAN I. BOZZELLO<\/p>\n

They say there\u2019s strength in unity, and perhaps that old adage can serve as a guide to how\u00a0La Gran Furtiva<\/strong>\u2019s triumph in the\u00a0Cl\u00e1sico Condesa (G3-1000m, yielding turf)<\/strong>\u00a0came together\u2014the race that opened Friday\u2019s four-race stakes sequence at\u00a0Hip\u00f3dromo de San Isidro<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

La Pampa is one of Argentina\u2019s key turf provinces, with multiple racetracks in operation, plenty of horses in training, and a large, strong group of breeders actively investing and dreaming big.<\/p>\n

It was a collaboration between two of the region\u2019s most recognized breeding operations that produced the chestnut filly who has now emerged as one of the leading sprinters among her generation. In 2020,\u00a0Silvia Schonholz<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Marcos Alfonso<\/strong>, owners of\u00a0Haras Masama<\/strong>, sent their broodmare\u00a0La Gran Fugitiva (Grand Reward)<\/strong>\u00a0to the generous\u00a0South Kissing (Southern Halo)<\/strong>\u00a0at\u00a0Haras El Cald\u00e9n<\/strong>, run by Gustavo and Lito Scarpello. The result of that pairing is today\u2019s top sprinter.<\/p>\n

One could go further and note that it was also very much a\u00a0La Quebrada<\/strong>\u00a0choice\u2014referring to the Ceriani Cernadas\u2019 operation that played a key role in Masama\u2019s development, both through stallion agreements and by maintaining a high number of mares carrying white and red genetics on Marcos Riglos\u2019s farm.<\/p>\n

The story is that, five years after that decision,\u00a0La Gran Furtiva<\/strong>\u00a0took a decisive step forward in her carefully managed, upwardly trending career, winning handily from one end to the other in what marked her debut on turf, having previously raced exclusively on Palermo\u2019s dirt course\u2014carrying Masama\u2019s silks.<\/p>\n

Under\u00a0Francisco Leandro<\/strong>, the\u00a0Lucas D. Tello<\/strong>\u00a0trainee traveled smoothly and drew away to defeat\u00a0Enjoy Dancing (Hi Happy)<\/strong>\u00a0by three lengths, with\u00a0Nisa (Angiolo)<\/strong>\u00a0completing the trifecta while the more fancied runners failed to factor.<\/p>\n
