{"id":401679,"date":"2025-09-06T03:58:38","date_gmt":"2025-09-06T03:58:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/401679\/"},"modified":"2025-09-06T03:58:38","modified_gmt":"2025-09-06T03:58:38","slug":"trump-threatens-retaliation-against-eu-over-google-fine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/401679\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump threatens retaliation against EU over Google fine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<strong>US President Donald Trump responded to the European Commission&#8217;s antitrust fine of Google by threatening to &#8220;nullify the unfair penalties&#8221; in a Truth Social <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/115153232183118149\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post<\/a> on Friday.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nOn Friday afternoon, the European Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/tech\/news\/eu-fines-google-e2-95-billion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced a<\/a> \u20ac2.95 billion fine against US tech giant Google for violating its competition laws in the digital ads market \u2013 an investigation the EU had open since 2021.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nTrump criticised the decision in a post on Truth Social on Friday and said that &#8220;my Administration will NOT allow these discriminatory actions to stand,&#8221; referring to the fine.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe fine was &#8220;effectively taking money that would otherwise go to American investment and jobs,&#8221; he asserted.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nTrump threatened to &#8220;start a Section 301&#8221; in response to the Commission announcement, referring to US trade laws that could lead to the imposition of tariffs and other restrictions on the EU. He said that he intends to open the proceeding to &#8220;nullify the unfair penalties charged to these taxpaying American companies.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAccording to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/crs-product\/IF11346#:~:text=Title%20III%20of%20the%20Trade,to%20certain%20foreign%20trade%20practices.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US government&#8217;s website<\/a>, only three countries are subject to investigations under Section 301, China, Nicaragua and Brazil.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nJust last month, Trump had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/tech\/news\/commission-stonewalls-in-the-face-of-fresh-trump-attacks-on-eu-digital-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warned countries<\/a> against enforcing their digital rules against American big tech companies \u2013 but he did not single out the EU at the time.
