But since undergoing bariatric surgery in 2021, hitting my doctor-prescribed protein goal (90 grams a day!) has been a challenge. I added some protein shake<\/a> to my morning coffee and had no problem eating a protein-heavy dinner, but lunch has been my downfall. I often forget to plan for lunch, and most days would run out to buy something or I\u2019d forget to make time to eat lunch altogether and end up snacking on whatever was around\u2014inevitably leading to less nutritious choices and a dreaded afternoon slump.<\/p>\n

When I was offered the chance to try Bentgo\u2019s Modern adult lunchbox<\/a>, I hoped it would reinvigorate my desire to meal plan lunch and start a routine that would, at the very least, have me eating more consistently. But what I didn\u2019t anticipate was how integral it would become in my nutrient journey. After just two weeks of consistent use, I\u2019ve started flying past my protein goals with ease\u2014impressing both myself and my doctor. No afternoon slump to be found. <\/p>\n

The Bentgo brand catapulted to popularity by taking the traditional Japanese bento box and turning it into a reusable lunchbox that stays perfectly organized. It\u2019s beloved by peopel of all ages for its modern style, with a capacity for 5.5 cups of food (44 oz) that is divided into three compartments: 3.5 cups (28 oz), 1.1 cups (9 oz), and .75 cups (6 oz). It also offers a removable divider for the largest compartment, which I did not use. <\/p>\n

Though the compartments are the main draw, the design is just the beginning of its attributes. The Modern lunchbox is encased in a hard shell to protect (and lightly insulate) your food, and offers an inner seal to help prevent leaks or spills both in and out of the lunchbox. Inside, the BPA-free tray is removable and both microwave- and dishwasher-safe.<\/p>\n

A struggle that the Bentgo Modern<\/a> immediately eliminated was the need to measure out my portions, which I have always found to be the most tedious part of meal prep. Based on the size of the lunchbox and its sections, I knew that if I filled the medium compartment with protein, the math would come out to about 40 grams (nearly half of my daily intake!). Most people don\u2019t need such aggressive protein servings, unless they are actively trying to bulk up their muscles. Overall, utilizing the compartments was a great way to practice portion control without the hassle of measuring everything out. <\/p>\n

When it comes to food, I am a creature of habit, and I love how the Bentgo has a formula that I could adapt: Salad greens\/cheese\/seeds\/dry veggies in the largest compartment, chopped lean protein in the medium compartment, and wet veggies (mostly chopped tomatoes) and dressing in the smallest compartment. With that baseline system, I could easily swap out the flavors to create new versions of the same lunch, and I found myself getting excited to plan the meal for the week ahead. If repetitive lunches aren\u2019t your thing, there are so many ways to utilize these compartments, but I found that removing so many options was helpful in creating my meal plan for the week. It felt easy and streamlined rather than overwhelming. <\/p>\n

What I didn\u2019t like<\/p>\n

For someone who has to commute 45 minutes on (mostly) foot, I found the lunchbox to be heavy in my backpack. I don\u2019t think there\u2019s any way around this, though, with a lunchbox that stays insulated and protected. And despite it feeling heavy, it was actually sleek and compact. <\/p>\n

Many online reviewers complained of leakage between compartments during travel, but despite being shoved into my bag on its side every day, I never experienced that; each quadrant of food was neatly contained within its assigned section. However, I did take out the removable section to make more room for my salad base. If people used it with wet or saucy foods, I could see how they would run into each other and make for an unappealing meal. The solution: If you plan to keep the removable divider, make sure to use dry, unsauced foods in those compartments to avoid potential leakage.<\/p>\n

One last thing <\/p>\n

The most surprising benefit of using this lunch box has been how much money (in addition to calories) I have saved since using it regularly. By actively getting excited to take lunch to work, I prevented myself from popping out to grab something convenient or unplanned\u2014to put it into perspective, the lunchbox (which I thought was pricey!) costs less than two sweetgreen salads. My wallet saw some instant relief, and it got me excited about meal prep again. <\/p>\n
