I think I always wanted to be Miss Perfect, the \u2018best Lulu&#8217;, and I was terrified of being like my father.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cFor years, I made a choice not to talk about [my alcoholism] publicly. I chose to wait until I had the language to understand it before I could start spouting off.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_Royal-Conservatoire-of-Scotland-honorary-doctorates.jpg\" alt=\"Lulu attending the opening for the musical The Devil Wears Prada at the Dominion Theatre, London\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>She said she wanted to wait until she had the language to understand her alcoholism before speaking publicly about it(Image: PA)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve learnt a lot from other people, their memoirs, and self-help books too, so maybe I can be of some help now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Lulu believes her drinking was \u201ccontrollable\u201d until she reached her sixties and her son Jordan Frieda, now 48, left home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">She said: \u201cFor me, it had been controllable until I got into my sixties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cAfter I became menopausal, with both my parents gone, the empty nest, looking around and seeing all the young kids in the music industry, I became more and more reliant on it and so it just got worse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cFor many years, and I can\u2019t say how many, I had not been happy with the way I felt, not at all happy and [yet] unable to ask for help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">And, Lulu firmly believes it is an inherited disease, calling her parents \u201cdamaged\u201d, and admitting she has \u201ccarried so much shame\u201d about their actions.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_DBR_MEN_171124Lulu_10.jpg\" alt=\"Lulu described her alcoholism as a &quot;family illness&quot;\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Lulu described her alcoholism as a &#8220;family illness&#8221;(Image: Carl Sukonik | The Vain Photography)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">She said: \u201cIt\u2019s a family illness. The gene is there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">She added: \u2018The thing about drink is that you become the worst part of who you really are. You can be happy and singing and having fun, but that doesn\u2019t last.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIf you keep drinking, you can become morose. We can become angry. I worked so hard to understand this.
