It’ll be broad daylight here (2:09 p.m. ET/11:09 a.m. PT) when moon gazers in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia are observing the event in the night sky, but you can watch it live online.

This full moon is also notable for what it’s not—the Harvest Moon. Though that’s usually September’s full moon, every so often it falls in October. That’s the case this year for the first time since 2020.

What do you call September’s full moon when it’s not the Harvest Moon?

It’s the Corn Moon, a seasonal nod to the corn that’s ready to harvest about this time of year. According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, September’s moon is traditionally linked to corn in multiple Native American tribes.

What Is the Harvest Moon, anyway, and why does it change months?

The Harvest Moon is also associated with the “Harvest Moon Effect,” when a full or nearly full moon rises at around sunset for several nights in a row during the harvest season. This is significant because, although a full moon always rises around sunset, the next evening, on average, it rises about 50 minutes later. But not during this full moon. Here’s why:

The moon’s orbit happens to be tilted toward the Earth’s horizon in the Northern Hemisphere around the time of the autumn equinox, according Astronomy Magazine. The result: the moonrise time the day after a full moon is significantly earlier than you’d expect. It might be only 20 minutes later than the evening before—or even less than 10 minutes later because the effect increases the farther north you are. Before artificial lighting, this phenomenon helped farmers by giving them extra light in the evening to finish up the autumn harvest. Hence the name, Harvest Moon.

Unlike other seasonal moon names that are set by month, the timing of the Harvest Moon is tied to how the lunar cycle lines up with the fall equinox, which is usually September 22 or 23. That means the Harvest Moon can be as early as September 8 or as late as October 9. The full moon on September 7, 2025, is just outside that window.

Related Stories

Terri Robertson is the Senior Editor, Digital, at Country Living, where she shares her lifelong love of homes, gardens, down-home cooking, and antiques.

[3844
1380,138755,1331,1381,70,138754,413,16,15
0":"post-402244","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-space","8":"tag-content-type-news","9":"tag-contentid-6c50c7a0-3f00-41a6-bcf6-bcbea737b09a","10":"tag-displaytype-standard-article","11":"tag-locale-us","12":"tag-science","13":"tag-shorttitle-why-this-september-full-moon-isnt-a-harvest-moon","14":"tag-space","15":"tag-uk","16":"tag-united-kingdom
["GET
