{"id":402312,"date":"2025-09-06T09:37:11","date_gmt":"2025-09-06T09:37:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/402312\/"},"modified":"2025-09-06T09:37:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-06T09:37:11","slug":"tributes-to-port-glasgow-florist-and-greengrocer-who-died","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/402312\/","title":{"rendered":"Tributes to Port Glasgow florist and greengrocer who died"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  Gordon Murray,\u00a0who ran Murray Florists and Greengrocers with his twin brother Alistair for 60 years, passed away on August 14 aged 78.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  In messages following his death well-wishers remembered his hard work and thanked him for his service.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Provost Drew McKenzie, who runs the butcher shop next door to their store in Princes Street, which closed a few months ago, says that he will greatly missed.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Murrays Florists and Greengrocers shut it doors for the final time in April after being in the family for 130 years.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>Gordon Murray\u00a0(Image: George Munro)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenocktelegraph.co.uk\/local-news\/port-glasgow-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Port Glasgow<\/a> man Gordon was an ever-present figure in the community and\u00a0known for tireless commitment and hard work.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Councillor McKenzie, who owns Robert Alexander Butchers in Princes Street, said: &#8220;Gordon Murray will be much missed by me and everyone else.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;He was the only person who was in even earlier than me in the morning. Gordon is a great loss and so too is the Murray Florists. We miss them all greatly in Princes Street.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  We reported in April this year that the florists in Princes Street had closed prompting an overwhelming response from people in the town.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Gordon Murry\u00a0was born in September 1947, with twin brother Alistair to Tommy and Dorothy Murray.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>(Image: contributed)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The family lived in Rossbank, Port Glasgow, and Gordon attended <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenocktelegraph.co.uk\/local-news\/greenock-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greenock<\/a> Academy.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  After school, Gordon was always destined for the family business where he would spend over 60 years working.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Mourners at his funeral at Knocksnairshill Cemetery heard that he was a keen angler in his youth, with trips to lochs and rivers all over Scotland.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He is remembered as someone who was devoted his life to work but also selflessly cared for his elderly mother.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Gordon was remembered as unassuming and hard working as he ran the family business\u00a0with Alistair driving their van every morning to the Fruit Market in Glasgow.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  His family were overwhelmed by the heart felt messages when the shop closed in April, as Gordon battled with his health and again when he died.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>(Image: contributed)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The closure of Murray&#8217;s provoked a massive response.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  It \u00a0was first\u00a0established by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenocktelegraph.co.uk\/local-news\/gourock-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gourock<\/a> Ropeworks foreman Henry\u00a0Murray back in\u00a01891.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Through the years the firm had stores in numerous locations in the town, including Fore Street, The\u00a0Glen, Bay Street, King Street and then two stores together in Princes Street.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  They also operated a\u00a0mobile shop van which visited streets throughout the town.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Both Gordon and his brother Alistair worked tirelessly together for 60 years.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  At his funeral last week it was noted that\u00a0one of the messages read\u00a0&#8216;rest easy Sir\u00a0and thank you for your service&#8217;.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Gordon Murray,\u00a0who ran Murray Florists and Greengrocers with his twin brother Alistair for 60 years, passed away on&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":402313,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[7826],"tags":[748,918,4884,712,16,15],"class_list":{"0":"post-402312","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-glasgow","8":"tag-britain","9":"tag-glasgow","10":"tag-great-britain","11":"tag-scotland","12":"tag-uk","13":"tag-united-kingdom"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/115156683500497913","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/402312","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=402312"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/402312\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/402313"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=402312"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=402312"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=402312"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
