(Image: BAYSE Reformer Pilates) The Reformer consists of a sliding carriage, springs, ropes, and straps, allowing for adjustable resistance and support during exercises.

Having only opened its doors three months ago, the interior of BAYSE immediately set the tone. It was bright, minimal, with huge mirrors lining the walls that gave it a modern, yet welcoming feel.

As well as the Bolton space, BAYSE also has studios in Warrington and Wilmslow and is quickly growing in popularity.

 READ MORE:

Oliver Norburn footballer opens pilates studio in Bradshaw

Farnworth’s glow up’ continues with wellness studio

Bolton mill brought back into use for hot yoga and pilates

It’s hard to imagine that owner James Scott built it himself, with the help of his 80-year-old dad and cousin, over evenings and weekends.

He said: “I grew up in Egerton and attended college in Horwich.

“I always wanted to start a business and preferably one in Bolton.

“An opportunity came up with one of my best friends as he was changing his gym businesses to reformer pilates studios and started this in November 2024.

“Luckily, he kept pushing me to find a unit while he started the build on the Stockton Heath studio, which are quite hard to come by in the space and type needed.

Owner, James Scott (left), centre, Roger Scott and Dylan Barclay (right). (Image: BAYSE Reformer Pilates) “With some luck a unit came up in Horwich, which I seized on.

“Then the task was to plan, design and build. The mirrors were a massive challenge but worth it.

“So, to keep the costs as low as possible. I undertook the planning and design.

“The build was then done by me with my dad, who is 80 years old with some help from my cousin.

Me during my first ever reformer Pilates class (Image: Leah Collins) “It took six weeks from start to finish, in my evenings and weekends after my main work. It was a lot of hard work and some sleepless nights, but I think we have created a great space, and to top it off, I found some of the greatest instructors.”

“We have had over 300 five-star google reviews and are building a good membership.

“What’s great is that your first class is free! My legs were shaking within minutes and the slow, controlled movements looked deceptively simple.

Inside BAYSE (Image: BAYSE Reformer Pilates)

I felt as though I got a tough yet fulfilling workout, which I was not at all expecting – I was still left feeling sore the next day!

Walking out, I felt like I’d discovered something genuinely new for Bolton’s fitness scene.
