(Image credit: Ronald Brecher)<\/p>\n<p id=\"cfdfa573-96ae-4a44-8fea-7e06a63c87aa\">Astrophotographer Ronald Brecher captured a haunting vista in July earlier this year, in which several deep-sky objects take on the collective appearance of a colossal cosmic shark hunting in the depths of space.<\/p>\n<p>The body of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/astrodoc.ca\/dark-shark\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/astrodoc.ca\/dark-shark\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">Brecher<\/a>&#8216;s shark is comprised of a vast interstellar cloud of dust and gas that stretches for <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/apod.nasa.gov\/apod\/ap230614.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/apod.nasa.gov\/apod\/ap230614.html\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">15 light-years<\/a> from snout to tail in the constellation Cepheus, some 650 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/light-year.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/light-year.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">light-years<\/a> from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Earth<\/a>. The radiation of energetic <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stars<\/a> has sculpted the cloud into the form of a gaping maw, while the suggestions of dorsal and pectoral fins are visible as your eyes sweep right across the &#8220;shark&#8217;s&#8221; nebulous body.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"cfdfa573-96ae-4a44-8fea-7e06a63c87aa-2\">&#8220;I love imaging dark nebulae,&#8221; said Brecher in an email to Space.com. &#8220;You need a fairly long total exposure time without moonlight because the wisps of nebulosity are so faint. Getting a bonus galaxy and a few blue reflection <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nebula-definition-types\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nebula-definition-types\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nebulae<\/a> is icing on the shark. Er, cake.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"892f9fb4-2c56-47fc-9f59-6e94f174c71a\">The single great &#8220;eye&#8221; of the shark is formed from the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/21640-star-luminosity-and-magnitude.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/21640-star-luminosity-and-magnitude.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">magnitude<\/a> 6 star HD 211300, while the barred <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22382-spiral-galaxy.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22382-spiral-galaxy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spiral galaxy<\/a> PGC 67671 is visible as a smudge of light slightly behind the shark&#8217;s dorsal fin. The patches of blue seen towards the top and bottom of the cosmic predator are formed by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eso.org\/public\/images\/potw2340a\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.eso.org\/public\/images\/potw2340a\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">reflection nebulas<\/a> \u2014 huge clouds of dust and gas made from particles that efficiently scatter the blue wavelengths of light from nearby stellar bodies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:66.67%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/eMYMFUDsaAyEVVHBHejJjK.jpg\" alt=\"A huge cloud of dark brown gas is pictured hanging against a colourful starfield.
