Gus Hamer is still a Sheffield United player, despite interest from the likes of Leeds United and more all the way up until the transfer deadline.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Even stretching back to last summer,\u00a0Gus Hamer<\/a>\u00a0was a target for\u00a0Daniel Farke and the 49ers at\u00a0Leeds United<\/a>. Then, going into this summer\u2019s transfer window,\u00a0Leeds\u2019 links to Hamer were reignited<\/a>\u00a0after Sheffield United\u2019s Championship play-off final defeat.<\/p>\n

Numerous Leeds fans wanted Hamer to sign<\/a>, which has been their view this summer and in previous windows as well. Hamer can be utilised as a No.10 or in a box-to-box midfield role, while the Blades featured him out wide last term.<\/p>\n

At one stage of the window, it looked as though it would be\u00a0one of Emi Buendia or Hamer for Leeds<\/a>. However, they ended up without that creative player that Farke was desperately craving.<\/p>\n

Graham Smyth\u2019s verdict on Gus Hamer following failed Leeds move<\/p>\n

Earlier in the summer, it was claimed that\u00a0Hamer preferred a move to PSV Eindhoven<\/a>, who were showing a strong interest in the Dutchman. But reports actually clarified that\u00a0Hamer would rather secure a Premier League move<\/a>\u00a0in the summer.<\/p>\n

PSV led the deadline day race for Hamer<\/a>. He stayed put in the end amid uncertainty in the race following reports that\u00a0they would only sign Hamer if Brentford signed Joey Veerman<\/a>\u00a0from PSV on deadline day.<\/p>\n

There was talk of Hamer and Leeds on deadline day<\/a>, too; but the reports from Danny Hall of the Sheffield Star outlining interest from the Whites evidently came too late. It never materialised and Graham Smyth of The Yorkshire Evening Post has the latest.<\/p>\n

Speaking via The Inside Elland Road Podcast, he said: \u201cLook, I never got the impression once during the window that Gustavo Hamer was a key target for Leeds or even a firm target. He was just a name that was continually put out there.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlmost as a, well, we can always go and get him. And then there was this suggestion that he was available. At the Sheffield United end, what they were hearing was the same as what we were hearing was that Leeds were not close to a deal for him. <\/p>\n

\u201cThen on deadline day, there was this kind of last minute little kind of spark of Hamer. I have had no information to confirm that Leeds made an attempt to get him. I think, firstly, it would have been too late in the day once they\u2019d gone all in on on getting Wilson. <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd, secondly, it wouldn\u2019t really have made sense. I don\u2019t even think he\u2019s what Leeds United particularly needed. Yes, he\u2019s something different, but if we\u2019re believing that Leeds United are hard up against PSR, it would have to be very worth it to go and get another player like a Hamer.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause you\u2019re likely going to have to then sell someone in January or in June to make sure you\u2019re within PSR or you\u2019re going to have to finish higher than you\u2019ve budgeted for because, you know, each player is worth however many million or you\u2019re going to have to pull some commercial moves. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re going to have to do something, really, to create the room. Now, Leeds felt that Wilson was worth doing that for. They felt that they could get Wilson and then make some moves.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause you\u2019ve got until June the 30th to to sell players or to make the money you need to to clear PSR. They felt in that case it was worth it. Would it have been worth it in the case of Gustavo? <\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know. I\u2019m just not sure. In the Championship, I was completely sold on him. In the Premier League, I\u2019m not so sold.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking later in the episode, Smyth explained that one way to create financial wiggle room would have been to sell key players for PSR headroom. However, amid that, he praised Jayden Bogle\u2019s recent rise in a Leeds shirt. <\/p>\n

He said: \u201cAo Tanaka [is one] because he was signed for pittance and could now be worth \u2014 I don\u2019t even want to put a number on it because because he\u2019s absolutely fantastic. <\/p>\n

\u201cJayden Bogle was signed for 5 million. That is looking worse and worse for Sheffield United all the time, you know, particularly with the way he started this season. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe started this season in the Premier League better than he started last season in the Championship. Players like that.\u201d<\/p>\n
