As many as 700,000 people don\u2019t even realise they are entitled to the benefit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Pension Credit, issued by the Department for Work and Pensions (<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/dwp\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">DWP<\/a>), is paid to people over the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/state-pension\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">State Pension<\/a> age who are on a low income and need extra money to help with living costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The means tested benefit can also <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/cost-of-living\/dwp-pension-credit-increase-april-31224471\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">help with housing costs<\/a>, such as ground rent or service charges. Pension Credit won\u2019t be paid automatically, so you have to submit a claim through the DWP.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">She added: \u201cIf you\u2019re unsure whether to claim because you\u2019re close to the income threshold, there\u2019s no harm in submitting a claim &#8211; the worst that can happen is you find you\u2019re not eligible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Who is eligible to claim Pension Credit?<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The Pension Credit benefit aims to top up people\u2019s State Pension to give them a more reasonable standard of living. Claiming can also unlock access to other means of support, such as council tax reductions and free TV licences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Pension Credit is separate from your State Pension, and you can get Pension Credit even if you have other income, savings or own your own home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">To claim, a person must live in England, Scotland or Wales and have reached the State Pension age (currently 66 and over). This should include the State Pension, other pensions, earnings from employment and self-employment, and most social security benefits, such as Carer\u2019s Allowance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Not all benefits are counted as income. For example, the following are not counted and shouldn\u2019t be included in the calculation:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Adult Disability Payment<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Attendance Allowance<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Christmas Bonus<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Child Benefit<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Disability Living Allowance (DLA)<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Personal Independence Payment (PIP)<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Social fund payments, such as the Winter Fuel Allowance<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Housing Benefit<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Council Tax Reduction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In April, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/cost-of-living\/dwp-pension-credit-increase-april-31224471\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">rates of the benefit went up<\/a> in line with the rate of inflation from the previous September &#8211; which was confirmed as being 1.7%, according to the consumer price index.<\/p>\n<p>Rates of Pension Credit<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Standard minimum guarantee<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Single: The maximum amount a single person may be able to claim is \u00a3227.10 a week<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Couple: The maximum amount a couple is able to claim is \u00a3346.60 a week<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Extra amounts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Top up and extra amounts given for other responsibilities and costs, known as <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/pension-credit\/what-youll-get\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018Guarantee Credit\u2019<\/a>, include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">If you have a severe disability, you could get an extra \u00a381.50 a week<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">If you care for another adult you could get an extra \u00a345.60 a week<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">If you\u2019re responsible for children or young people you could get an extra \u00a366.29 a week for each child or young person you\u2019re responsible for. This is increased to \u00a376.79 a week for the first child if they were born before 6 April 2017.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">If the child or young person is disabled you could also get an extra amount of either: \u00a335.93 a week if they get DLA, PIP or ADP, or \u00a3112.21 a week if they\u2019re blind or they get the highest rate care component of DLA or CDP, or the enhanced daily living component of PIP or ADP<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">If you have savings or a second pension you could get the \u2018Savings Credit\u2019 part of Pension Credit. To be eligible you must have reached State Pension age before 6 April 2016 and have saved some money for retirement, for example in a personal or workplace pension. You\u2019ll get up to \u00a317.01 Savings Credit a week if you\u2019re single and, if you have a partner, you\u2019ll get up to \u00a319.04 a week.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">If you live alone and have a weekly income of less than \u00a3227.10 (just over \u00a311,800 a year), then you\u2019ll likely be eligible for Pension Credit. The same applies to a couple with an income of \u00a3346.60 per week, equivalent to just over \u00a318,000 a year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">However, if your income is higher, you might still be eligible, so it\u2019s worth using the Government\u2019s calculator to find out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It takes an average of 16 minutes to check, according to Pensions Minister Emma Reynolds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Ms Reynolds previously said: \u201cWe know 90% of new customers apply using our simple online form or over the phone. So I would urge everyone to check for their own eligibility or assist family members to apply online or pick up the phone today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;The online process takes on average 16 minutes, so I would encourage people to apply for Pension Credit, worth around \u00a34,200 a year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">To apply for the benefit, people can reach the helpline by telephone on 0800 99 1234 or by textphone on 0800 169 0133.
