While their relationship is strained now, one former royal butler initially thought that Prince Harry<\/strong><\/a> and Kate Middleton<\/a> would end up dating following her infamous split from his brother, Prince William.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey got on so well,\u201d Grant Harrold<\/strong>, a former butler to King Charles III<\/strong><\/a> and author of the new book The Royal Butler<\/a>, out Tuesday, September 23, exclusively told Us Weekly on Friday, September 5.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember, when [Prince William] and [Kate] separated \u2014 and I think I said this \u2014 you know, [Prince Harry] and [Kate] got on so well that I even thought that maybe Harry and her would get together,\u201d he continued. \u201cThey were that close. They were best friends, and I wouldn\u2019t have put it past Harry thinking, \u2018Well, she\u2019s a pretty girl, My brother didn\u2019t want her. I\u2019ll have her.\u2019 That wouldn\u2019t have surprised me at all. So it could have been Harry and Catherine easily, I would have thought. But, you know, thankfully [William] got her back.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cWhat I\u2019m trying to say is, that is how close they were.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFormer royal butler Grant Harrold is offering new insight into Prince Harry\u2019s relationship with his sister-in-law, Princess Kate Middleton. \u201cThey involved him,\u201d Harrold, 47, wrote in his upcoming book The Royal Butler: My Remarkable Life of Royal Service, according to an excerpt published by The Telegraph on Monday, August 18. \u201cHe used to go out [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n

Prince William and Middleton started dating in 2001, after they met at the University of St. Andrews. The pair infamously broke up in 2007, though they reconciled in 2008 and went on to announce their engagement in 2010.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the time, I wasn\u2019t very happy about it, but it actually made me a stronger person,\u201d Kate said of the pair\u2019s split during a joint interview with William in November 2010. \u201cYou find out things about yourself that maybe you hadn\u2019t realized. I think you can get quite consumed by a relationship when you are younger, and I really valued that time for me as well, although I didn\u2019t think it at the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead of swooping in and dating his brother\u2019s ex, Harrold said that he believes Prince Harry ultimately pushed his brother William to reconcile with his future wife.<\/p>\n

\u201cHarry definitely would have said to his brother, \u2018You\u2019re crazy.\u2019 I\u2019m sure. I\u2019m convinced of it,\u201d he told Us. \u201cWe all thought it, you know. We were all thinking, \u2018This is mad.\u2019 Because they were such a good couple together. And you know, when they separated in 2007, you know, we all wanted [them] to get back together. I was thrilled when they did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPrince Harry\u2019s relationship with Prince William isn\u2019t the only dynamic that has changed over the years. The Duke of Sussex\u2019s bond with his sister-in-law, Princess Kate, has gone through its own changes following his and Meghan Markle\u2019s royal exit. While Harry always had kind words for his sister-in-law \u2014 \u201cI\u2019ve known Kate for years, and [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n

Despite their close relationship, Prince Harry and Kate Middleton have been distant amid his estrangement from his brother and his father, King Charles. After Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle<\/strong><\/a>, renounced their titles as senior working royals and relocated to California, the Duke of Sussex\u2019s relationship with his family has been strained, even amid Kate and King Charles\u2019 cancer battles.<\/p>\n

Harrold believes that despite the estrangement, Prince Harry reached out to his sister-in-law after she announced she was diagnosed with an unspecified type of cancer in March 2024. (In January of this year, the Princess of Wales revealed she was in remission.)<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d like to think he did. I would like to think that,\u201d Harrold told Us. \u201cBut, you know \u2026 I mean \u2026 he\u2019s not a bad guy.
