The mum of one of the killers of an aspiring footballer who was murdered in a Birmingham<\/a> nightclub has been found guilty of trying to help her son flee the country.<\/p>\n

Jahzeen Carpenter drove to London a day after her son Kami Carpenter had stabbed Cody Fisher to death at the Crane nightclub in Digbeth<\/a>, late on Boxing Day evening 2022.<\/p>\n

Carpenter arrived in the capital on the evening of Tuesday, December 27 in her Mercedes convertible, while her son was found with two suitcases of clothes.<\/p>\n

Officers spotted the mum and son a day later and arrested both of them outside flats in the Lewisham area of south east London at around 8.30am on December 28.<\/p>\n

Officers searched the white Mercedes and found \u00a35,000 in cash which they seized.<\/p>\n

Police examined the 40-year-old\u2019s phone and found she had searched for a flight from Gatwick Airport to Kingston, Jamaica.<\/p>\n

And her son had booked a seat on the flight which was due to leave at 1.20pm on the day they were arrested.<\/p>\n

Carpenter of Peak Drive, Lower Gornal in Dudley<\/a> denied helping her son try to leave the country.<\/p>\n

But she was found guilty of assisting an offender after a trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court. She is due to be sentenced on 15 October.<\/p>\n

Detective Inspector Phil Poole, from West Midlands Police<\/a> \u2019s homicide team, said: \u201cCody\u2019s murder left his family and friends devastated and struggling to come to terms with what had happened.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut while his loved ones were grieving, Carpenter\u2019s mother was trying to help her son avoid capture and flee to Jamaica, which would have severely hampered our investigation and delayed justice.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe worked really closely with colleagues from the Metropolitan Police, who were able to move in and arrest both of them before Kami Carpenter could leave the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt meant we were able to achieve justice for Cody\u2019s family, and our thoughts remain with them to this day.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday\u2019s conviction just shows how many lives and families knife crime can destroy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last year, Kami Carpenter, now 24, was jailed for life for Cody\u2019s murder and ordered to serve a minimum of 25 years before he can be considered for release.<\/p>\n

Another man, Remy Gordon, was ordered to serve at least 26 years after being convicted of the same offence.<\/p>\n

Cody, aged 23, from Redditch<\/a> had accidentally bumped into Gordon at Popworld in Solihull<\/a> and the pair exchanged a few words.<\/p>\n

But Gordon refused to forget the encounter, and set about trying to identify Cody from social media images he found of him on other nights out.<\/p>\n

He learned Cody\u2019s name, and that he was likely to be at the Crane on Boxing Day.<\/p>\n

Inside the Crane, just before midnight on Boxing Day, Cody was surrounded before being headbutted, punched and kicked.
