The state of Bristol\u2019s Shopping Quarter made headlines once again recently following <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/bristol-hits-back-rees-mogg-10460079\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">a social media rant<\/a> from Annunziata Rees-Mogg, sister of ex-MP Jacob Rees-Mogg.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;Bristol really brought home the malaise we are suffering from in our country,&#8221; she concluded her post on X, formerly known as <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/twitter\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a>. &#8220;It felt like a city that had given up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Bristol Live set out to see if that withering assessment was fair, and headed to Broadmead on an overcast September morning to speak to other shoppers. Those canvassed did not hold back in their critique.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s a cesspit, they should bulldoze it all down,\u201d Carol Porter, a 72-year-old who has lived in Bristol her entire life, said. \u201cIt\u2019s covered with filth, druggies and drunks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI only come down here if I\u2019ve got to. I used to meet my friend here every three weeks, now it\u2019s (at most) every eight weeks, it\u2019s getting so bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Tessa, a fellow shopper, agreed with Ms Porter&#8217;s damning verdict. &#8220;It&#8217;s pretty horrendous,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I used to enjoy coming into town but now I just try to get in and out as quickly as possible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_BRI_PG_020925broadmead_vox-9.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Carol Porter says Broadmead is in need of improvement(Image: PAUL GILLIS \/ Reach PLC)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Ms Porter, from Whitchurch, was reluctantly accompanying her grandson on a shopping trip. She said she had rarely seen the city centre in as grim a condition as in the present day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWho wants to come here?\u201d she asked. She said her daughter, who worked at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, had to call people during her brief walk through the city centre after work to get to her car because she feared for her safety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Vivienne Kennedy, director of the Broadmead Business Improvement District, acknowledged the frustration many people had at the state of the shopping area, but said any solution would take time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWe absolutely recognise that some people feel frustrated about the challenges facing Broadmead right now,\u201d she said. \u201cWe are actively working with our partners to collect the right data and build a fair picture of the issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThere isn\u2019t a quick fix, but there is a shared determination to make sure the city centre is welcoming, safe and sustainable for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Ms Westwood pointed to new openings <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/whats-on\/empty-bristol-city-centre-wilko-10262087\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">such as The Climbing Hangar<\/a> and La Mart as signs of life in Broadmead, along with the lease extension of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/whats-on\/sofab-amazing-story-behind-broadmeads-9399561\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Sofab Sports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Other new openings are set to breathe life into Cabot Circus. A <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/whats-on\/new-marks-spencer-store-one-10326897\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">huge new Marks &amp; Spencer<\/a> is due to open this autumn, in the site formerly occupied by House of Fraser.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Major Japanese fashion brand Uniqlo is also set to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/whats-on\/whats-on-news\/popular-japanese-fashion-brand-open-10434761\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">open its first Bristol store<\/a>, with an exact timeframe for the opening still to be announced. And the feedback from visitors to Broadmead wasn\u2019t universally negative.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Yvonne Gentile, who was on holiday in the UK from Kansas City in the USA, said she was enjoying her time in the city centre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s great,\u201d she said. \u201cThere\u2019s plenty of people around, lots of shopping opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI like it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_BRI_PG_020925broadmead_vox-2.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Yvonne Gentile said she liked Broadmead during her visit(Image: PAUL GILLIS \/ Reach PLC)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">John, from <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/horfield\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Horfield<\/a>, didn\u2019t see it quite the same. \u201cIt\u2019s pretty bad,\u201d he said. \u201cThe sooner they get rid of The Galleries and start it all again the better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Plans to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/plans-knock-down-galleries-shopping-9904574\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">demolish The Galleries<\/a> and build new offices and restaurants, along with hundreds of homes and student flats, were approved at the start of the year. An exact timeline has yet to be put in place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">BID director Ms Kennedy said the regeneration was important, and pointed to a few initiatives which have been put in place to make sure the city centre didn\u2019t become a ghost town once the project got underway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cLooking ahead, we know regeneration of The Galleries will take time, but the area is not being left to drift,\u201d she said. &#8220;Initiatives <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/whats-on\/wildflower-meadow-take-over-broadmead-10202999\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">such as Broad Meadow<\/a>, which has created welcome green space in Broadmead, and leisure and cultural offers like<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/whats-on\/whats-on-news\/gallery\/first-look-roxy-lanes-extension-9788133\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> Roxy Lanes<\/a> and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/city-centre-skate-park-inside-10108085\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Shredenhams <\/a>are helping to keep the area active.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">An area nearby to The Galleries is also set for major regeneration.
