(Picture: Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Waking up <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2022\/03\/22\/why-do-i-sweat-in-so-much-in-my-sleep-16310523\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">drenched in sweat<\/a> occasionally is nothing to worry about \u2014 especially after a bad dream or <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/07\/06\/this-one-simple-sleep-trick-will-cool-a-heatwave-23593950\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">on a hot night<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But if this is a constant thing for you, it may be cause for concern.<\/p>\n<p>On X, the NHS warned patients that although it\u2019s a \u2018common\u2019 symptom to experience every so often, \u2018if you <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/06\/07\/this-common-bedtime-habit-can-make-insomnia-worse-20985541\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">regularly wake up<\/a> with soaking wet sheets, you should see a GP.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/health-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">health<\/a> service, a night sweats are when you sweat so much that your night clothes and bedding are soaked, \u2018even though where you\u2019re sleeping is cool.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Both adults and children can suffer with them, and sometimes the cause is unknown. <\/p>\n<p>However, Dr Suzanne Wylie, GP and medical adviser for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iqdoctor.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IQdoctor<\/a>\u00a0tells <strong>Metro<\/strong> they\u2019re \u2018particularly <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2022\/10\/18\/how-to-cope-with-hot-flushes-and-night-sweats-during-menopause-17584698\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">common during the menopause<\/a> transition\u2019 due to how hormones impact body temperature.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" sweats will differ for each person and depending on other factors, but Dr Wylie defines it as \u2018several times a week or in a pattern that persists over a number of weeks\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The reason is that persistent or unexplained night\u00a0sweats\u00a0can sometimes be linked to underlying health conditions such as infections, thyroid problems, <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/diabetes\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">diabetes<\/a>, or, less commonly, certain cancers such as lymphoma,\u2019 she explains. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018They can also be a side effect of some medications, including antidepressants.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tWhen to see a doctor\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/symptoms\/night-sweats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the NHS website<\/a>, it\u2019s time to speak to your GP if:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>you have night sweats regularly that wake you up or worry you<\/li>\n<li>you also have a very high temperature (or feel hot and shivery), a cough or diarrhoea<\/li>\n<li>you have night sweats and you\u2019re losing weight for no reason<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other health issues that can lead to night sweats include anxiety, obstructive sleep apnea, or a condition called\u00a0hyperhidrosis that causes excessive perspiration.<\/p>\n<p>Or, they may simply be down to lifestyle factors like eating spicy foods, consuming caffeine or alcohol, or exercising late at night.<\/p>\n<p>Either way, Dr Wylie says it\u2019s \u2018sensible\u2019 to chat to your GP, adding: \u2018That allows us to check for any underlying cause and, if nothing due to how they impact your sleep.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you get the <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/11\/07\/exact-amount-extra-sleep-need-per-night-less-think-21947455\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recommended seven to nine hours<\/a> overall, interrupted sleep can affect your brain function, physical health, and emotional well-being.<\/p>\n<p>Our bodies and brains go through several rounds of a four-stage sleep cycle each night, with the third phase \u2013 known as N3, delta sleep or deep sleep \u2013 believed to be the most restorative.<\/p>\n<p>When you wake up before or during this, you\u2019re <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/05\/08\/this-happens-get-less-six-hours-sleep-a-night-23046615\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">missing out on vital recovery<\/a> and growth \u2014 and by disrupting the cycle, you\u2019ll likely feel extra tired the next day.<\/p>\n<p>To prevent a disturbed night\u2019s shut-eye, practice good sleep hygiene by avoiding screens before bed, keeping your room dark and quiet, and maintaining a consistent sleep schedule.
