{"id":405577,"date":"2025-09-07T15:44:19","date_gmt":"2025-09-07T15:44:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/405577\/"},"modified":"2025-09-07T15:44:19","modified_gmt":"2025-09-07T15:44:19","slug":"60m-bangs-and-clangs-and-three-places-embrace-the-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/405577\/","title":{"rendered":"\u00a360m bangs and clangs and three places embrace the future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The council has gained just under \u00a360m from Levelling Up funding for three of its towns<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_IMG_3151.jpg\" alt=\"Construction work going on in Ashton town centre\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Construction work going on in Ashton town centre(Image: LDRS)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Massive change is coming to Tameside town centres over the next decade thanks to a cash pot of almost \u00a360m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Since 2021, the council has been successful in Levelling Up Funding bids &#8211; grabbing \u00a320m for <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/ashton-and-mossley\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Ashton<\/a>, \u00a317m for <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/denton-and-audenshaw\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Denton<\/a> and \u00a320m for <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/stalybridge-and-dukinfield\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Stalybridge<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">These three projects have all seen progress in the last few weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Anyone who has visited Ashton recently will notice the humdrum of the town centre has become a clang and bang of construction work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">To see planning applications; traffic and road diversions and layout changes; and more, visit the Public Notices Portal <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/publicnoticeportal.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"HERELink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">HERE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The transformation of Market Square is the first obvious visual representation of the Levelling Up cash being spent in the borough.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A total of \u00a314.6m is being spent on replacing the 104 fixed market stalls with a large canopy containing 10 market kiosks.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_IMG_3143.jpg\" alt=\"Construction work going on in Ashton town centre\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Construction work going on in Ashton town centre(Image: LDRS)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Construction workers are busy building the new covering, which will provide market traders with protection from the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/manchester-weather\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">weather<\/a> and become a hub for events and cultural activities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">But town hall bosses aren\u2019t stopping there. Last week council chiefs laid down a \u2018statement of intent\u2019 to kickstart a massive project surrounding Market Square.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Thousands more homes are to be built alongside the region\u2019s first fully-integrated Bee Network station \u2013 connecting <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/metrolink\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Metrolink<\/a>, bus and train services. At the latest town hall meeting, the executive cabinet signed off on finding a development partner for the scheme by Spring 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Deputy leader Coun Andrew McLaren said \u2018this is a true statement of intent\u2019 to achieve their ambition for 2,400 new homes; 12.5 hectares of commercial space to support businesses and jobs; and Greater Manchester\u2019s first fully connected Bee Network station.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">To do this Ladysmith Shopping Centre, which has been a mainstay off Market Square since the 1960s, would have to be bulldozed. Both the Arcades and Ladysmith shopping centres are set to be reconfigured.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_Ashton-town-centre-regeneration-design-concept.jpg\" alt=\"Ashton town centre regeneration design concept\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Ashton town centre regeneration design concept(Image: Tameside Council)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The majority of Ladysmith\u2019s retail offerings would be transferred to the Arcades next door as it would make space for 306 new homes. It would also become a gateway connecting a revitalised Market Square to the transport interchange via a new public realm where the old bus station once stood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Filling the space left by the old station would be 466 new homes and 5,710 sqm of \u2018active ground floor space\u2019, linking the town centre to its transport hubs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The Arcades would then become the central hub for shopping, with a cinema and leisure facilities earmarked for the first floor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">This latest version of the Ashton masterplan builds on the ongoing transformation of Market Square and development of St Petersfield as part of the Ashton Mayoral Development (AMDZ).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The masterplan is aimed at ensuring people can move about the town centre safely and easily; creating welcoming \u2018gateways\u2019; bringing more visitors to the town; and building on public realm improvements in Market Square.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Coun Andrew McLaren, deputy leader and executive member for growth, housing and homelessness, said: \u201cA development partner will help us move faster with our plans for Ashton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cBy connecting public and private sites, we\u2019re laying the groundwork for real growth. The council received \u00a316.8m in the third round of funding at the end of 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">That full pot of money has been thawed this summer, so the local authority is pressing ahead working out how to splash the cash.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_JS271941555.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Denton Town Hall(Image: Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The specifics of the scheme are not yet clear, but it is expected the money will go towards improving the public realm and active travel options as well as works at Denton Town Hall and the repurposing of the Festival Hall site.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The public realm across the town centre and Victoria Park will benefit from significant improvements too, according to council plans. These will include improved pedestrian and cycling routes, cycling parking and work which will support the Denton Mayors Challenge Fund (MCF) Crown Point Scheme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Progress has already been made now the Festival Hall has temporarily closed as plans kick into motion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The iconic functions venue in the heart of the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/tameside\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Tameside<\/a> town will be transformed into a space for a mixture of residential and community use. Some \u00a32m has been earmarked for delivering a sustainable future for Denton Festival Hall.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_Denton-Festival-Hall.jpg\" alt=\"Denton Festival Hall, Peel Street, Denton\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Denton Festival Hall, Peel Street, Denton(Image: Google Maps)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The building\u2019s temporary closure on August 29 will allow work to begin to prepare the property for marketing to a development partner to help deliver the vision for the Peel Street site, according to Tameside council.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Deputy council leader and executive member for growth, housing and homelessness, Coun Andrew McLaren, said: \u201cWe respect the heritage of Denton Festival Hall and its value as a community venue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;However, the hall has not been in full time use for a number of years and \u2013 in its current format and condition \u2013 is an unsustainable drain on public funds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThe Levelling Up money presents an exciting opportunity for us to work with a private developer to redevelop the building to secure its future to meet both residential and community needs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIn the meantime, we\u2019re working closely with current users of the building to ensure they can continue their valued work in the community during the temporary closure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stalybridge<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1_Stalybridge-town-centre.jpg\" alt=\"Canal running through Stalybridge town centre\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Canal running through Stalybridge town centre(Image: LDRS)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Once known as \u2018Staly Vegas\u2019 for its party status in the early noughties, Stalybridge is one of Tameside\u2019s most picturesque towns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">With a canal acting as an artery through its heart boasting a wealth of wildlife and a train station ideal for commuters &#8211; it\u2019s clear why the local authority wants to throw money at the town.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Now plans to titivate its historic assets and overhaul its western edge have surged ahead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Four underused plots of land could soon unlock the \u00a311.1m scheme to give the area round the train station a facelift.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The area has been targeted for new housing; improved roads; public realm upgrades; a new multi-storey car park; and a pedestrian footbridge. The idea behind this is to deliver regeneration of the town centre, attract further investment, and deliver vital new housing.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_CGI-of-what-Castle-Street-could-look-like-under-future-Stalybridge-vision.jpg\" alt=\"CGI of what Castle Street could look like under future Stalybridge vision\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>CGI of what Castle Street could look like under future Stalybridge vision(Image: Tameside Council)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In order to do this, Tameside council is now looking to remediate some of their own land in order to kickstart this project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Council car parks on Waterloo Road and Castle Street, as well as vacant land on Caroline Street and Bridge Street are all touted for remediation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">This means, if plans are approved, the land parcels would have pollutants or contaminants removed so it is safe to reuse for future development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The proposed new multi-level car park would replace existing surface level car parking that would be lost through the remediation process.
