{"id":40604,"date":"2025-04-22T08:37:10","date_gmt":"2025-04-22T08:37:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/40604\/"},"modified":"2025-04-22T08:37:10","modified_gmt":"2025-04-22T08:37:10","slug":"donald-trumps-escalating-battle-with-the-us-fed-headed-for-a-showdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/40604\/","title":{"rendered":"Donald Trump&#8217;s escalating battle with the US Fed headed for a showdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">US President Donald Trump has again rattled global investment markets, this time with his threats to interfere with the independence of America&#8217;s central bank.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The president has ramped up his war with the US Federal Reserve, calling chair Jerome Powell a &#8220;major loser&#8221; and demanding interest rates be cut immediately, in a re-run of his first term tirade against the head of the world&#8217;s most powerful central bank.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">His attacks follow comments from Powell last week over the new administration&#8217;s tariff policies.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-04-22\/asx-markets-business-news-live-updates-april-22\/105199102\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105199102\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Markets live updates: follow the latest stock moves on the ASX and Asian markets, plus the day&#8217;s business news on our live blog.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;These are very fundamental policy changes,&#8221; Mr Powell told the Economic Club of Chicago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There isn&#8217;t a modern experience of how to think about this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He said the tariff levels were &#8220;significantly larger than anticipated&#8221; and that they could result in both lower growth and higher inflation, making it difficult for the Fed to react, essentially ruling out a rate cut.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While those comments sent stocks sharply lower on Thursday, Mr Trump&#8217;s attacks over the weekend, including confirmation from Kevin Hassett, Director of the National Economic Council, that Mr Trump was examining whether it would be possible to fire Powell, sent Wall Street plunging again on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">On Thursday, US time, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-04-18\/trump-lashes-out-at-jerome-powell\/105190678\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105190678\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mr Trump posted on social media<\/a> that Mr Powell&#8217;s termination could not come fast enough. On Monday, he doubled down, <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-04-22\/asx-markets-business-news-live-updates-april-22\/105199102#live-blog-post-171959\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">labelling the Fed chair &#8220;Mr Too Late, a major loser&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-04-17\/financial-markets-insiders-warn-tariff-volatility-further-falls\/105183014\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Why the market meltdowns may have been a trial run<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">While the past few days has seen calmness return to markets, many of the financial world&#8217;s best minds fear further falls \u2014 and warn we&#8217;re nowhere near the end, unless America backs away from its current policy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I think that is terrifying markets, because a politicised Fed would be one in which we see much higher inflation, and accordingly, much higher interest rates eventually, which would ultimately lead stock markets into a massive crash,&#8221; said Monash University economist Zac Gross.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Once again, the falls weren&#8217;t confined to stocks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Bond prices also fell, sending market interest rates higher, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-04-10\/donald-trump-met-match-on-tariffs-in-bond-market-rout\/105160436\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105160436\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a trend that first emerged a fortnight ago<\/a> and which forced the president to delay implementing his &#8220;Liberation Day&#8221; tariffs by three months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In addition, the US dollar came under renewed attack as nervous investors, concerned about a compromised US Fed, abandoned US government bonds and shifted their money out of the country and instead headed to alternative safe havens such as the Swiss franc and gold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;You almost need a degree in psychology to forecast where the economy and stock market are going,&#8221; Dr Gross told ABC News.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;That&#8217;s because almost everything that&#8217;s happening is happening through the actions of one man, Donald Trump,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;So, the real question of whether the stock market is going to continue falling, or maybe even stage recovery is really a question of &#8216;Is Donald Trump going to stop hitting the economy in the face with his own policy decisions?'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;Can Trump fire US Fed chair Powell?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Federal Reserve lawyers believe the US president doesn&#8217;t have the power to fire Jerome Powell.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But the US Supreme Court is expected to rule within days about whether Mr Trump has the authority to remove board members from two other independent agencies, which may embolden him to move against Mr Powell.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The White House has repeatedly attacked the judiciary, Congress and the bureaucracy for any decisions that are not in keeping with its decrees.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-04-22\/trade-war-china-us-tariffs-bonds-trump\/105197156\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump could be fighting a losing battle in a US-China trade war<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">There are no winners in a US-China trade war. The question is which country can endure the most pain and emerge with the least damage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While Mr Trump&#8217;s actions so far have resulted in large-scale demonstrations and public outpourings of anger, the global reaction on financial markets \u2014 <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-04-13\/trumps-tariffs-destroying-americas-exorbitant-privilege\/105164676\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105164676\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">which now are openly challenging almost a century of US dominance<\/a> \u2014 will be difficult for the new administration to ignore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Even if Mr Trump can crowbar Mr Powell out of the job, he may not succeed in forcing the institution to bend to his will.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">There are six other members on the Financial Open Markets Committee that make monetary policy decisions who may resist any attempt to interfere in interest rate settings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While Mr Powell&#8217;s role as chair expires in May next year, he would be entitled to remain on the board until 2028 \u2014 which, given his previous determination to resist being removed by the president, could make life difficult for any new appointee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Foremost among those reportedly being considered for the role is White House economics adviser Kevin Hassett, the very man who confirmed the president was looking at legal avenues to unseat Mr Powell.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Kevin Hassett smiles and gestures\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/64a2492383ad590e3c1db8ba53f90674\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">White House economic advisor Kevin Hassett says Mr Trump was examining whether it would be possible to fire Mr Powell.
