Cycling legend Sir Chris Hoy said he was \u201ctotally overwhelmed\u201d after his charity event raised more than \u00a32m to help in the fight against cancer.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The former Olympian, who has spoken publicly about his terminal prostate cancer diagnosis, was joined by a host of sporting stars for the Tour De 4 fundraising bike ride.<\/p>\n

Sir Chris led riders on the event, with retired tennis star and fellow Scot Andy Murray among the thousands of riders taking part.<\/p>\n

Also riding for the fundraiser \u2013 which started and finished at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow \u2013 were sailor Sir Ben Ainslie, swimmers Duncan Scott and Rebecca Adlington and Paralympian cyclist and swimmer, Dame Sarah Storey.<\/p>\n

Fellow cycling stars Sir Mark Cavendish and Sir Jason Kenny also took part to show their support along with others who, like Sir Chris, are suffering from stage 4 cancer.<\/p>\n

The event on Sunday raised a total of \u00a32,135,406, with the cash going to five charities \u2013 Breast Cancer Now, Cancer Research UK, Macmillan Cancer Support, Maggie\u2019s and Prostate Cancer UK.<\/p>\n

Speaking afterwards Sir Chris said: \u201cI am totally overwhelmed by today, the support we have received and the amazing people who came to Glasgow \u2013 it\u2019s incredible.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I first set out to create this event I plucked \u00a31m out of the air as it sounded like a pretty decent amount to raise!<\/p>\n

\u201cToday we have more than doubled that and I am so delighted.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cEvery single person who has ridden, fundraised or donated \u2013 this is down to you. Thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sir Chris was once Scotland\u2019s most successful Olympic athlete, but the now retired sporting star was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer in 2023.<\/p>\n

GoFundMe said \u201cthousands of donations poured in\u201d with senior vice president John Coventry stating: \u201cWhat we\u2019ve seen in Glasgow is truly extraordinary \u2013 thousands of people coming together, led by Sir Chris Hoy, to raise vital funds for cancer charities that make such a difference in people\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt GoFundMe, we\u2019re proud to stand behind the people whose kindness and support made the Tour De 4\u2019s \u00a32 million milestone possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ahead of the event Sir Chris encouraged people who have recently been diagnosed with cancer to \u201chang on tight\u201d and stay positive.<\/p>\n

At a press conference on Saturday he revealed that in the initial days following his diagnosis he did not think he would ever be happy again.<\/p>\n

But he said with time the disease becomes \u201cjust a part of your life\u201d, adding that you \u201cdon\u2019t have to be defined by it\u201d.<\/p>\n

Speaking to other people suffering with cancer he said: \u201cTo anybody who is going through a similar thing, just hang on tight.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ll get through it, it\u2019ll get easier. It seems like the worst thing in the world right now, but you can, you can do it.\u201d<\/p>\n
