{"id":407819,"date":"2025-09-08T12:42:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-08T12:42:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/407819\/"},"modified":"2025-09-08T12:42:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-08T12:42:10","slug":"incompetent-plans-for-jet-ski-tours-from-edinburgh-thrown-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/407819\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Incompetent&#8217; plans for jet ski tours from Edinburgh thrown out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  The scheme would have seen the motorised craft launched from Portobello Beach to explore the Forth through guided tours.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  But Edinburgh councillors refused it, citing deep concerns over public safety and the practicality of the scheme.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Sufyan Tunesi, the applicant, was not present at the Monday Licensing Sub-Committee meeting, and was not present for two other meetings where his application was to be heard.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Edinburgh Council\u2019s public safety team objected, submitting a paper with objections for the review of city councillors, though these were not read out in the Monday meeting.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <strong>READ MORE:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.scot\/news\/25447706.edinburgh-university-lecturers-begin-5-day-walkout-140m-cuts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edinburgh University lecturers begin 5-day walkout over \u00a3140m cuts<\/a><\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Council public safety officer David Sinclair said the department had sought expert advice from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.scot\/news\/health\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">Health<\/a> and Safety Executive due to their lack of familiarity with boat hire schemes.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.scot\/topics\/police-scotland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Police Scotland<\/a> also objected, with police sergeant Grant Robertson saying: \u201cSimilar to public safety, this is an area that we were not specialised in.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cSo we sought advice from external stakeholders, which includes the Police Scotland marine unit, and we have several concerns regarding the nature of the application.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cThe applicant is lacking detail in respect to the exact location on Portobello Beach that they intend to operate from.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cPortobello is popular throughout the year with open swimmers, kayaks, and other non-motorised vehicles. There are inherent risks of allowing jet skis to operate in the waters.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Robertson also questioned how the rentals would even work, given that jet skis must be launched from a vehicle, and vehicle access to Portobello Beach is not allowed.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>Edinburgh&#8217;s\u00a0Portobello Beach (Image: PA) He further added that there was no evidence that Tunesi had consulted with the coastguard about the plans, and said the nearest full-time lifeboat was half an hour away.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Forth Ports, which has some powers to regulate boat traffic along the Forth, also submitted a written objection to the proposal.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  After hearing the objections, Liberal Democrat councillor Neil Ross asked: \u201cMy question is only to officers, to ask them if we\u2019ve had any response at all from the applicant?\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Council licensing officer Catherine Scanlin replied that the department had received no communication from Tunesi when trying to reach him about the application.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Committee convener and Conservative councillor Joanna Mowat asked if he had been sent the objections seen by councillors, with Scanlin replying that he had.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.scot\/news\/25059069.news-interviews-updates-snp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SNP<\/a> councillor Norman Work said: \u201cI was going to ask police or the council anyway about this, and this was answered.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cI\u2019m quite disappointed that there\u2019s not detail. You normally need vehicle access.
