Two lifelong friends with a flair for the eccentric are gearing up for an endurance challenge to raise money for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity.<\/p>\n
Amy, a former Olympic sprinter, and Queenie, a prize-winning pie maker, will compete in the Race Across the UK, an event organised by the charity to support serving and retired naval personnel and their families.<\/p>\n
The pair, who first met on a rugby pitch 25 years ago, are tackling the challenge with their trademark humour. Past exploits include a runner-up medal at a table football championship and success at Paignton<\/a> International Pie Festival.<\/p>\n \u201cThese brushes with glory have prepared us well for the glare of the spotlight,\u201d Amy said. \u201cWe know our friends, families and probably a few curious strangers will be tracking our every move.\u201d<\/p>\n Queenie added: \u201cWe have trained for the long and challenging days, late nights and early starts by staying up to 10.23 on a recent overnight ferry crossing AND getting up for a 7:50 arrival.\u201d<\/p>\n The team has also used what they describe as \u201cmental fortitude\u201d training \u2014 choosing \u201cgood French wine over bad French tea\u201d \u2014 to prepare for the demands of the race.<\/p>\n Beyond the jokes, the duo has raised significant funds through events including wine tastings and quizzes. \u201cWe\u2019re incredibly proud to be supporting this fantastic charity, which does so much to help Royal Navy and Royal Marines personnel and their families. It\u2019s an honour to be part of this challenge,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n
