Pete Doherty<\/a> has shared a new health update, saying that \u201csomething has sort of shifted\u201d in him and he is now following a new lifestyle.<\/p>\n

The Libertines<\/a> and Babyshambles<\/a> frontman shared the update during a new interview with Fearne Cotton as part of her Happy Place Podcast. During the discussion, he opened up about his most recent health struggles, and outlined the changes he has made to improve his wellbeing.<\/p>\n

It comes as earlier this year, the singer revealed he was at risk of having his toes amputated<\/a> and now wearing orthopaedic shoes<\/a> due to type 2 diabetes. He was given the diagnosis last year, and at the time said that he believed he \u201cwas healthier when he was on heroin\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were going to have to come off,\u201d he said of his toes while talking to Cotton. \u201cThey\u2019re kind of on the mend now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Doherty continued, saying that the concerns about his health mean that he now rarely drinks alcohol, and finds the temptation of it less prominent than before. \u201cI\u2019m letting myself have a drink once in a while, like, every 10 days,\u201d he said. \u201cBut something has sort of shifted in me. There\u2019s not that need.\u201d<\/p>\n

Explaining how the decision has improved his family life, he quipped that his wife Katia de Vidas \u201cpreferred me not on drugs\u201d, and that he \u201cpreferred it when she liked me\u201d. He then said that his addictions over the years led to an unhealthy relationship with his career, as his need to \u201cwrite and create\u201d was \u201cfuelled by anxiety and darkness\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

When Doherty shared last month on The Chris Moyles Show<\/a> that he was wearing orthopaedic shoes, he told the host that he had experienced people making \u201churtful\u201d and \u201ccruel\u201d comments about it<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Discussions about his well-being go back to 2023, when the singer said that he was \u201ca very sick man\u201d who felt \u201cdeath lurking\u201d<\/a>. There, he explained how he has worked to overcome numerous vices over the years, ranging from \u201cheroin and crack\u201d and \u201csmoking and alcohol\u201d, to \u201ccheese and saucisson, and the sugar in the tea\u201d.<\/p>\n

Then, promoting his documentary Stranger In My Own Skin<\/a> \u2013 which explored his struggles with addiction over the years \u2013 Doherty told NME that he was successfully living a \u201ccleaner\u201d and \u201csober-er\u201d lifestyle<\/a> compared to his earlier years.<\/p>\n

Last year, he then sat down for an in-depth conversation with NME, and described what it was like to be still making music with The Libertines,<\/a> and how life had changed since their early days at the turn of the century. \u201cI don\u2019t think I ever dared to dream that I\u2019d still be knocking about and making music,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Discussing the band\u2019s latest album, the chart-topping \u2018All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade<\/a>\u2019, in a separate interview, Doherty told us how his <\/a>drug-free, serene life in France<\/a> altered his approach to writing music with Carl Bar\u00e2t<\/a> and co.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s proper toe-to-toe with the demons, but because I believe so much in Carl, Gary, John and this record, it\u2019s a pleasure,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just want to do my bit, be as professional as I can, let people hear the songs, and then go and play them. All we want to do is write beautiful songs. That\u2019s what we\u2019ve always wanted to do, but we got distracted \u2013 mostly by ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

In terms of solo material, Doherty will release a new album called \u2018Felt Better Alive\u2019<\/a> on May 16 (pre-order\/pre-save here<\/a>), and has both intimate \u2018Anywhere In Albion\u2019 UK shows and \u2018Felt Better Alive In Europe\u2019 dates coming up. Speaking to NME about the spirit of the upcoming album<\/a>, Doherty said: \u201cThere can be something uplifting about resignation, but at the same time you\u2019re not just sat at home moping and singing these things to yourself.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re still going out there and singing them. I think there\u2019s enough melancholy in this record to fill a good-sized jerry can. The idea is to splash it on the audience and see if it ignites or not.\u201d<\/p>\n
