\n\tJust hours after Independent 20th Century<\/a> art fair closed its doors to the public, the fair announced that Sotheby\u2019s will host its 2026 edition in the auction house\u2019s soon-to-be flagship headquarters in Manhattan\u2019s historic Breuer building. The move, first reported by the New York Times<\/a>,\u00a0will be a significant expansion for the fair and a first-of-its-kind collaboration between an art fair and an auction house in the art market\u2019s modern era.<\/p>\n

\n\tFounded in 2022, Independent 20th Century spotlights overlooked and celebrated artists of the last century, with curatorial programming that reframes movements from women in Surrealism to Arab Modernism. Its move to the Breuer\u2014a landmark of Modernist architecture designed by Marcel Breuer and recently renovated by Herzog & de Meuron with PBDW Architects\u2014will allow the fair to considerably enlarge its footprint to more than 50 galleries.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThis is more than a new venue location, it\u2019s a symbol of how we wish to imagine unforgettable exhibitions of the 20th Century for a well-informed audience and for a new generation of collectors,\u201d Independent\u2019s founder Elizabeth Dee<\/a>, said in a statement. \u201cIndependent 20th Century will create a museum-caliber exhibition experience that supports extraordinary galleries and brings their curatorial and market expertise to light in new ways.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Breuer, once home to the Whitney Museum of American Art and later host to the Met Breuer and the Frick Madison, will now serve as the setting for Independent\u2019s intimate, non-trade-fair format. Matthew Higgs, the fair\u2019s founding curatorial advisor, said the aim remains \u201cto create environments that allow art to be seen in its best light\u201d rather than replicate the \u201ctrade fair-like aesthetics\u201d of larger events.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile the alliance with Sotheby\u2019s underscores a changing art landscape, Independent stressed its autonomy. \u201cSotheby\u2019s will not have any curatorial voice within our exhibition,\u201d Dee said, noting that the partnership is \u201cmission driven\u201d and designed to broaden the audience for 20th-century art<\/a> through shared programming and new public initiatives.<\/p>\n

\n\tFor Sotheby\u2019s, which will formally occupy the Breuer later this year, the collaboration aligns with its push to reposition its buildings as cultural venues rather than auction-only sites. \u201cTogether with Independent 20th Century, we hope to create a dynamic environment for discovery, dialogue, and exchange at the Breuer,\u201d said Madeline Lissner, Sotheby\u2019s global head of fine art.<\/p>\n
