(ABC South East SA: Elsie Adamo)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Morgan Feast is a fifth-generation cattle and sheep farmer in Wye, south of Mount Gambier, and is not allowed a water licence due to the property&#8217;s proximity to Piccaninnie Ponds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Instead, the farm relies on water from karst rising springs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The flow of freshwater from the springs is also important in stopping seawater intrusion on farmland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But Mr Feast said, for the <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/rural\/2024-05-08\/water-allocations-limestone-coast-over-allocated-climate-change\/103781412\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/103781412\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first time since it was dug 80 years ago<\/a>, the drain on the property was running dry.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;There&#8217;s just not as much water laying around as there used to be,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  he said.<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Graphs showing water level decline over time at Piccaninnie Ponds and Ewens Ponds\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6161bc08403fa9e6f574eae051e48c28\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Long-term water levels at Piccaninnie and Ewens ponds. (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p>Certain areas over-allocated<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While water is building up on the property over winter, it is not flowing with enough force to drain into the sea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Feast said the situation had become &#8220;pretty worrying&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I hope it doesn&#8217;t get any worse, which is hard to see,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ponds surrounded by boggy farmland\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/2eeae59c69466aed2e03626294063c60\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Ewens Ponds has been closed at different points due to low water levels. (ABC South East SA: Sam Bradbrook)<\/p>\n<p>An environment under stress<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">One person who does believe change is needed is cave diver Dr Richard Harris, who is known by most for his role in the2018 Thai cave rescue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A regular visitor to the region&#8217;s sinkholes and caves, he is concerned by what he has seen underground and at the ponds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We go into a cave from winter to summer to spring, year after year after year, and you get used to seeing the normal cycle of the water coming up and down,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;But over the past four, five, six years it has been apparent that it is continuously dropping.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;The water levels we&#8217;re seeing in most of the caves now is the lowest I&#8217;ve seen them.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man in a blue shirt with white spots looks concerned, with diving equipment behind him\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/21c352b262984893865263adc75c6abd\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Diver and Thai cave rescuer Dr Richard Harris lives in Adelaide, but regularly visits the south-east.
