{"id":410174,"date":"2025-09-09T10:18:16","date_gmt":"2025-09-09T10:18:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/410174\/"},"modified":"2025-09-09T10:18:16","modified_gmt":"2025-09-09T10:18:16","slug":"final-decision-on-controversial-one-way-system-for-ramsbottom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/410174\/","title":{"rendered":"Final decision on controversial one-way system for Ramsbottom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More than 1.500 people took part in a consultation about the contentious proposals to change traffic flows<\/p>\n<p>10:53, 09 Sep 2025Updated 10:58, 09 Sep 2025<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_ram-one-way.jpg\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Bridge Street in Ramsbottom<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Plans for a one-way system in Ramsbottom town centre have been scrapped after an outcry from hundreds of residents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Last year, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/bury\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bury<\/a> council launched a consultation on a range of \u2018Streets for All\u2019 investment schemes in the centre of the town.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Initial proposals included changing traffic flows to make the roads one way going up Bridge Street from the railway station up to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/bolton\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bolton<\/a> Street and then one way coming down Kay Brow leading onto Railway Street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">To see planning applications; traffic and road diversions and layout changes; and more, visit the Public Notices Portal <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/publicnoticeportal.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"HERELink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">HERE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The council said this was \u2018specifically to tackle the conflict between pedestrians and traffic on Bridge Street\u2019 but has now decided that, following the consultation, it will not proceed with the one-way system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The council has today published the details of the consultation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_Rammy.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>A proposed one-way system through Ramsbottom has been scrapped<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It said that while some elements of the Streets for All scheme were supported, such as footpath improvements and new crossings, the proposed one-way system \u2018generated significant concerns\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">They mostly related to the use of Kay Brow for HGVs and buses, a perception that it would lead to increased congestion, and the potential impact on access for emergency services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The local authority said the remaining planned investments would improve pedestrian safety in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/ramsbottom\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Ramsbottom<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">More than 1,500 responses were received during discussions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Improvements now suggested include creating widened footpaths, a 20mph zone and new pedestrian crossings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The council said it will concentrate on delivering the proposals that were supported by the community, as well looking at wider opportunities to improve cycling and walking routes to the town centre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Coun Eamonn O\u2019Brien, leader of Bury Council, said: \u201cThe volume and strength of feeling expressed during the consultation highlights the importance of Ramsbottom town centre to the local community. Local councillors in Ramsbottom echoed much of what the community said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s exactly why we reached out to residents to consult, to listen, and we can now show that we have changed our approach in light of that feedback.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWe plan to move forward with elements of the town centre proposals that received clear public support, such as safer pedestrian crossings, and will not be implementing a one-way system. We will also be improving some walking and cycling routes to and from the town centre.
