Travelling from one end of the UK to another by train<\/a> often costs more than return flights to Europe<\/a>.<\/p>\n But thanks to a budget-friendly rail company, Lumo, getting from London<\/a> to Glasgow<\/a> has never been cheaper.<\/p>\n Lumo has been dubbed the \u2018Ryanair<\/a> of trains\u2019, having been compared to low-budget airlines including the Irish carrier and Easyjet<\/a>, due to its cheaper tickets, baggage limits and lack of first class.<\/p>\n The all-electric company already runs a direct line between Edinburgh<\/a> and the English capital, with one-way tickets costing as little as \u00a349 if you book in advance. With a railcard, it can be even cheaper.<\/p>\n Currently, the only direct rail service between London King\u2019s Cross and Glasgow is via Avanti\u2019s West Coast line. An off-peak single ticket can set you back as much as \u00a3133. Peak times can jump to \u00a3208.<\/p>\n The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) approved the extension of Lumo\u2019s existing service, which will see Glasgow Queen Street added to the London to Edinburgh route.<\/p>\n \t\t They also gave the green light to the company\u2019s other Hull<\/a> and Newcastle<\/a> routes.<\/p>\n The expansion will mean more sustainable<\/a> travel opportunities linking Scotland and England, supporting the Scottish Chamber of Commerce\u2019s call for partnership, innovation, and growth.<\/p>\n Richard Salkeld, head of communications and partnerships at Lumo, told Metro<\/strong> that the majority of its customers are travellers who want to get from London to Glasgow, or vice versa, but can\u2019t afford extortionate rail prices.<\/p>\n \u2018Lumo is an open-access operator, which means we take full commercial risk for running the services. We don\u2019t get government or public subsidiary \u2014 we take on the risk and have to be confident that we can make it work, all while complementing the existing services that already run.<\/p>\n \u2018Glasgow is somewhere we\u2019re looking forward to serving, and we\u2019re confident we can make it as successful as our London to Edinburgh route.\u2019<\/p>\n How often will the London King\u2019s Cross to Glasgow service run?<\/p>\n \t\t\t\tLatest London news\t\t\t<\/p>\n To get the latest news from the capital visit Metro’s<\/strong> London news hub<\/a>.<\/p>\n On weekdays, there will be two northbound services and one southbound service between London King\u2019s Cross and Glasgow Queen Street. <\/p>\n On Sundays, there will be one in each direction.<\/p>\n The journey will take a little longer than Avanti\u2019s 4 hours and 51 minutes. (The London to Edinburgh journey time is between 4 hours 22 minutes and 5 hours.) <\/p>\n But for budget travellers, the extra time on the train enjoying the views is likely worth it.<\/p>\n \t\t Stephanie Tobyn, ORR\u2019s director of strategy, policy and reform, said: \u2018Approving these additional open access services will increase connectivity on the\u00a0East Coast Main Line.<\/p>\n \u2018Passengers and freight customers can benefit from more direct connections and greater choice from December.\u2019<\/p>\n How much will the London to Glasgow service cost?<\/p>\n \u2018Fares aren\u2019t live yet, but are due to be announced in the coming weeks,\u2019 Salkeld told us.<\/p>\n But, as an indication in terms of sample prices, he said Lumo\u2019s average fare between London and Edinburgh is in the region of \u00a349.<\/p>\n The schedule \u2014 including the exact date the service will launch, is still to be finalised, too.<\/p>\n However, consumer site Which? claims that Lumo\u2019s prices and services can be compared to low cost airlines like Ryanair and Easyjet, due to the cheaper tickets, lack of first class carriages, no buffet cart, and baggage limits.<\/p>\n Given that tickets to Edinburgh come in at \u00a349 \u2014 and Glasgow\u2019s stop comes after \u2014 tickets are likely to be slightly more expensive, but not much.<\/p>\n Glasgow isn\u2019t the only Scottish destination becoming more accessible to budget travel.<\/p>\n Lumo also announced the expansion of its Scotland Rail Network, with a new London to Stirling route from Spring 2026<\/a>.
