It was visible from much of the Eastern Hemisphere, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/lunar-eclipses\/blood-moon-best-photos-total-lunar-eclipse-sept-7-2025\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/lunar-eclipses\/blood-moon-best-photos-total-lunar-eclipse-sept-7-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">thrilling countless people<\/a> across western Australia, Asia, Africa and Europe.<\/p>\n<p>It was also visible from 250 miles (400 kilometers) above <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Earth<\/a> \u2014 the average altitude of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16748-international-space-station.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16748-international-space-station.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ISS<\/a> \u2014 and the folks up there didn&#8217;t have to worry about clouds blocking their views.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/cjsQ6oz42SFkrcXcqKtm2j.jpg\" alt=\"image of a lunar eclipse seen from the international space station, showing part of the gray moon hidden in shadow\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/cjsQ6oz42SFkrcXcqKtm2j.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/cjsQ6oz42SFkrcXcqKtm2j.jpg\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>NASA astronaut Jonny Kim&#8217;s shot of the eclipse from the ISS. (Image credit: Jonny Kim\/NASA via X)<\/p>\n<p id=\"6e6440a2-53e3-4a2b-8129-bc02ec92a028\">But they did face other issues, as NASA&#8217;s Zena Cardman explained.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"6e6440a2-53e3-4a2b-8129-bc02ec92a028-1\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a challenge to catch <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the moon<\/a> up here \u2014 we don&#8217;t have any up-facing windows, so we can only see the moon for a few minutes between moonrise and moonset before it disappears above the ISS or below the horizon,&#8221; she wrote in an <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/zenanaut\/status\/1965103852438306993\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/zenanaut\/status\/1965103852438306993\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\">X post<\/a> on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yesterday was an extra challenge, dealing with low-angle light bouncing through the multi-paned cupola glass,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p>But Cardman was successful in capturing the eclipse, as were her ISS colleagues Jonny Kim of NASA and Kimiya Yui of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22672-japan-aerospace-exploration-agency.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22672-japan-aerospace-exploration-agency.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JAXA<\/a>). (Image credit: Kimiya Yui\/JAXA)<\/p>\n<p id=\"38fcf0d0-7f13-45dd-a713-6be057087354\">One of Yui&#8217;s photos demonstrated the &#8220;<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/39471-what-is-a-blood-moon.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/39471-what-is-a-blood-moon.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blood moon<\/a>&#8221; effect of a total lunar eclipse, showing Earth&#8217;s nearest neighbor exhibiting a coppery glow.<\/p>\n<p>This results because <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Earth&#8217;s atmosphere<\/a> absorbs relatively short wavelengths of light, letting only the longer-wavelength reddish hues through to paint the lunar surface.<\/p>\n<p>Yui and Cardman, along with NASA&#8217;s Mike Fincke and Russian cosmonaut Oleg Platonov, arrived at the ISS on Aug. 2 on SpaceX&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/human-spaceflight\/watch-spacexs-crew-11-astronauts-arrive-at-the-iss-early-aug-2\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/human-spaceflight\/watch-spacexs-crew-11-astronauts-arrive-at-the-iss-early-aug-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Crew-11 mission<\/a>.
