{"id":411816,"date":"2025-09-10T00:50:12","date_gmt":"2025-09-10T00:50:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/411816\/"},"modified":"2025-09-10T00:50:12","modified_gmt":"2025-09-10T00:50:12","slug":"spacex-targets-sept-23-for-launch-of-nasas-imap-mission-to-map-the-boundaries-of-our-solar-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/411816\/","title":{"rendered":"SpaceX targets Sept. 23 for launch of NASA&#8217;s IMAP mission to map the boundaries of our solar system"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"fcec8c20-2308-4488-98d8-d3ffd857a0db\">SpaceX is preparing to launch three spacecraft on a first-of-its-kind mission to study the sun&#8217;s influence throughout the solar system, from Earth&#8217;s atmosphere to the edge of interstellar space.<\/p>\n<p>A <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Falcon 9<\/a> rocket is scheduled to lift off from Launch Complex-39A, at NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17705-nasa-kennedy-space-center.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17705-nasa-kennedy-space-center.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kennedy Space Center<\/a> in Florida, on Sept. 23 at 7:32 a.m. EDT (1132 GMT). Stowed inside Falcon&#8217;s payload fairing are NASA&#8217;s Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe (IMAP), the Space Weather Follow-on (SWFO-L1) spacecraft from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and NASA&#8217;s Carruthers Geocorona Observatory.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"fcec8c20-2308-4488-98d8-d3ffd857a0db-2\">The satellite trio is bound for the Earth-sun <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/30302-lagrange-points.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/30302-lagrange-points.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lagrange Point-1<\/a> (L1), an orbitally stable location in permanent sunlight that lies 930,000 miles (1.5 million kilometers) from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Earth<\/a>. Though each mission has its own distinct objectives, their combined science is designed to build a more complete picture of the Earth-sun relationship.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"65c953a5-d588-4c73-a3e1-7fd38f83804f\"><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-imap-interstellar-dust-2025-launch\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-imap-interstellar-dust-2025-launch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IMAP<\/a> is the first spacecraft dedicated to mapping the outer boundary of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/heliosphere-shape-remains-mystery-without-scientific-probe\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/heliosphere-shape-remains-mystery-without-scientific-probe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">heliosphere<\/a>, the vast magnetic bubble surrounding our <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">solar system<\/a> that&#8217;s formed by the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22215-solar-wind.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22215-solar-wind.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">solar wind<\/a>. The satellite&#8217;s 10 instruments, built by teams across the U.S. and with contributions from 27 international partners, will measure solar wind, interstellar dust and charged particles, while also providing continuous solar weather monitoring.<\/p>\n<p>IMAP and its companions will be the first spacecraft to observe <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/solar-cycle-frequency-prediction-facts\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/solar-cycle-frequency-prediction-facts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">solar activity<\/a> from their L1 vantage point, and are designed to offer between 30 minutes to an hour of advanced warning of dangerous radiation storms headed for Earth.<\/p>\n<p>This is particularly important for astronaut missions beyond <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">low Earth orbit<\/a> (LEO), which won&#8217;t enjoy much radiation protection from Earth&#8217;s magnetosphere. And NASA aims to launch two such missions soon \u2014 the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-humans-moon-orbit\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-humans-moon-orbit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Artemis 2<\/a> flight around the moon in 2026 and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Artemis 3<\/a> lunar landing mission in 2027.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;IMAP will provide warnings beginning with Artemis 2 and Artemis 3 of incoming harmful radiation storms faster than any other spacecraft has done before,&#8221; Nicky Fox, associate administrator of NASA&#8217;s Science Mission Directorate, told reporters during a press conference on Sept. 4.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>David McComas, principal investigator for the mission, said IMAP data &#8220;will help us better understand the fundamental physics of the heliosphere&#8221; and how it shields Earth and spacefarers from cosmic rays.<\/p>\n<p>Riding alongside IMAP, NOAA&#8217;s SWFO-L1 will serve as a dedicated solar alert system, monitoring <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-weather\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-weather\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">space weather<\/a> and energetic particles in real time. Its data will feed directly into NOAA&#8217;s forecasting models to help safeguard satellites, communications systems and power grids from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/auroras\/cannibal-solar-storm-sparks-dazzling-northern-lights-across-europe-and-north-america-photos\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/auroras\/cannibal-solar-storm-sparks-dazzling-northern-lights-across-europe-and-north-america-photos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">geomagnetic storms<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>NASA&#8217;s Carruthers Geocorona Observatory \u2014 previously known as the Global Lyman-alpha Imagers of the Dynamic Exosphere (GLIDE) \u2014 is tasked with studying Earth&#8217;s exosphere, a thin atmospheric layer that extends nearly halfway to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the moon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We actually don&#8217;t know exactly how big it is,&#8221; said University of Illinois scientist Lara Waldrop, the mission&#8217;s principal investigator. &#8220;We don&#8217;t know whether it&#8217;s spherical or oval, how much it changes over time, or even the density of its constituent hydrogen atoms.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"9e7cad35-3c23-4526-b73f-1339955db3f9\">Waldrop said what we do know is that the exosphere plays a critical role in Earth&#8217;s response to geomagnetic storms.
