Ginnel to be gated off in crime hotspot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.burytimes.co.uk\/topics\/local-government\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Councillors<\/a> are due to approve the installation of alley gates on either side of the ginnel between Malton Avenue and Sawley Avenue, which will be locked.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.burytimes.co.uk\/homes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Residents<\/a> who live directly attached to the gated route would be given access, along with the council and emergency services.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Last year, 67 crimes were reported within a 100-metre radius of the ginnel,\u00a0some of which included serious violence or injury.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <a as our breaking news alerts.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.burytimes.co.uk\/topics\/greater-manchester-police-gmp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greater Manchester Police (GMP)<\/a> launched \u2018Operation Vardar\u2019\u00a0in response, and officers have been working closely with residents to help tackle problems\u00a0around anti-social behaviour, drug use, intimidation and knife crime.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The Whitefield policing team have also been working alongside the council to obtain a public spaces protection order for the ginnel.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  This is a legal tool used by local authorities to crack down on specific incidents of nuisance and crime, and gives powers for officers to hand out fines.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Speaking to the Bury Times following a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.burytimes.co.uk\/news\/crime\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stabbing<\/a> on Malton Close in November, one resident said they had stopped walking around the estate, fly-tipping hot spot<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  They shared that they no longer use the nearby ginnel, which they said was home to \u201ca lot of drug use and other criminal activity.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Councillor Sandra Walmsley, cabinet member for communities and inclusion, said: \u201cResidents are fed up with problems being caused in the area, and they are overwhelmingly in support of this move, which is also backed by the police.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cI hope this will help give them the peace of mind they deserve.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The proposal is due to be approved by the council\u2019s
