The reptile-like structure is the latest in a long list of Martian rocks that look similar to living creatures or other Earth objects.<\/p>\n<p>Perseverance captured the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/mars.nasa.gov\/mars2020\/multimedia\/raw-images\/SIF_1610_0809874437_382EBY_N0790102SRLC00660_0000LMJ\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/mars.nasa.gov\/mars2020\/multimedia\/raw-images\/SIF_1610_0809874437_382EBY_N0790102SRLC00660_0000LMJ\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">new image<\/a> on Aug. 31, on what was its 1,610th Sol, or Martian day, on the Red Planet. The wandering, car-sized robot snapped the shot somewhere in the Jezero Crater \u2014 a 28-mile-wide (45 kilometers) depression where the rover touched down in 2021, which is thought to have previously contained a large lake.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"a22e58fe-639c-4de5-a1f9-0b50b51c2d36-2\">The photo was taken using the rover&#8217;s Scanning Habitable Environments with Raman &amp; Luminescence for Organics and Chemicals (SHERLOC) and Wide Angle Topographic Sensor for Operations and eNgineering (WATSON) instruments, which combined to scan the rock in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/50678-visible-light.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/50678-visible-light.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">visible<\/a> and ultraviolet wavelengths of light, according to Live Science&#8217;s sister site <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/mars\/nasa-perseverance-rover-spies-a-turtle-on-mars-space-photo-of-the-day-for-sept-5-2025\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/mars\/nasa-perseverance-rover-spies-a-turtle-on-mars-space-photo-of-the-day-for-sept-5-2025\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">Space.com<\/a>. Its other recent finds include a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/mars\/nasas-perseverance-rover-spies-mysterious-helmet-on-mars-photo\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/mars\/nasas-perseverance-rover-spies-mysterious-helmet-on-mars-photo\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">bizarre medieval &#8220;helmet&#8221;<\/a> that it wheeled past in August and an <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/mars\/nasa-rover-discovers-out-of-place-skull-on-mars-and-scientists-are-baffled\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/mars\/nasa-rover-discovers-out-of-place-skull-on-mars-and-scientists-are-baffled\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">out-of-place &#8220;skull&#8221;<\/a> that is snapped in April.<\/p>\n<p>The Martian turtle is not the only &#8220;animal&#8221; to be spotted on the Red Planet.
