Manchester has been named one of the UK\u2019s best city breaks for autumn, according to The Times<\/a>. The publication has shared a list of cities across the country which are \u201cjust as charming at this time of year\u201d as any European destination<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The likes of York, Glasgow and Bath also made the shortlist of seven locations with \u201cculture, parks, indoor fun and good aesthetics\u201d to visit during the season.<\/p>\n

While The Times does make a dig at Manchester\u2019s climate, it goes on to explain that the city\u2019s rainy disposition means autumn is just the right time to pay the city a visit \u201cwith burnished leaves fluttering down to canal boats in Castlefield Basin and cosy roast dinners\u201d luring diners into independent restaurants<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Compared to Cambridge, York and Oxford, known for their historical buildings and lack of high-rises, Manchester feels like an unlikely destination to be included.<\/p>\n

But The Times praises the canals of \u2018Castlefield Basin\u2019 which \u201ctakes on a romantic feel in autumn \u2014 all red-brick converted mills and warehouses set off by butterscotch leaves and red ivy.\u201d<\/p>\n

It highlights the “inspiring food and culture scene\u201d of the city. Manchester Art Gallery gets a mention thanks to the \u201cstrong presence\u201d of \u201cwistful, autumnal pre-Raphaelites\u201d.<\/p>\n

Then it recommends readers to pay a visit to the restaurant Higher Ground which is a \u201clove letter to seasonal fare, with pumpkin, celeriac and venison the stars come autumn.\u201d<\/p>\n

The publication also notes the Manchester Literature Festival which returns this October, with readings from Mick Herron and Elizabeth Day.<\/p>\n

It recommends visitors stay at \u201cquirky former textile warehouse\u201d Abode Manchester, ideally placed to explore the nearby \u201ccafe heaven\u201d of the Northern Quarter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere on the list, York is a top destination for the run-up to Halloween with \u201cghost tours and spooky attractions\u201d while Bath is described as \u201cone of the best cities in the country for combining culture and cosy corners\u201d.<\/p>\n
