{"id":412698,"date":"2025-09-10T08:41:11","date_gmt":"2025-09-10T08:41:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/412698\/"},"modified":"2025-09-10T08:41:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-10T08:41:11","slug":"you-could-help-nasa-track-its-artemis-2-astronauts-trip-around-the-moon-in-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/412698\/","title":{"rendered":"You could help NASA track its Artemis 2 astronauts&#8217; trip around the moon in 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"63ae8913-1e0b-4bd7-908b-906231fa0498\">NASA is asking citizen scientists, space industry employees and other volunteers to help them track the first human mission to the moon in more than 50 years.<\/p>\n<p>The agency put out a call for volunteers to passively track the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-humans-moon-orbit\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-humans-moon-orbit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Artemis 2<\/a> mission&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Orion spacecraft<\/a> when it launches in April 2026 or thereabouts, to keep an eye as the four astronauts aboard loop around <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the moon<\/a> and then come back to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Earth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"63ae8913-1e0b-4bd7-908b-906231fa0498-2\">Examples of volunteers may include &#8220;international space agencies, academic institutions, commercial companies, nonprofits and private citizens,&#8221; according to a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA<\/a> statement. You can read more about the opportunity and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/sam.gov\/workspace\/contract\/opp\/50d4e81f54e34118a8164fb786b554a6\/view\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/sam.gov\/workspace\/contract\/opp\/50d4e81f54e34118a8164fb786b554a6\/view\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">apply at this website<\/a>, before the deadline of Oct. 27 at 5 p.m. EDT (2100 GMT).<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"d0eaa89a-9a65-4396-8ed8-84a303d67866\">NASA, of course, already has tracking and communications systems that will watch over the Artemis 2 astronauts: The agency&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/39578-deep-space-network.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/39578-deep-space-network.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deep Space Network<\/a> and Near Space Network sets of dishes will help NASA with launch, deep-space operations and reentry.<\/p>\n<p>But the agency is asking for help from external groups &#8220;to further understand industry&#8217;s tracking capabilities,&#8221; under a request from NASA&#8217;s Space Communication and Navigation (SCAN) program.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By offering this opportunity to the broader aerospace community, we can identify available tracking capabilities outside the government,&#8221; Kevin Coggins, NASA&#8217;s deputy associate administrator for SCAN at the agency&#8217;s headquarters in Washington, said in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/humans-in-space\/commercial-space\/nasa-seeks-volunteers-to-track-artemis-ii-mission\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/humans-in-space\/commercial-space\/nasa-seeks-volunteers-to-track-artemis-ii-mission\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">the statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This data will help inform our transition to a commercial-first approach, ultimately strengthening the infrastructure needed to support Artemis missions \u2014 and our long-term moon to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/47-mars-the-red-planet-fourth-planet-from-the-sun.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/47-mars-the-red-planet-fourth-planet-from-the-sun.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mars<\/a> objectives.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>On board Artemis 2 will be NASA astronauts <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-astronaut-reid-wiseman-space-biography\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-astronaut-reid-wiseman-space-biography\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reid Wiseman<\/a> (commander), <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/victor-glover.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/victor-glover.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Victor Glover<\/a> (pilot) and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/christina-koch\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/christina-koch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christina Koch<\/a> (mission specialist), and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22534-canadian-space-agency.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22534-canadian-space-agency.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canadian Space Agency<\/a> astronaut and mission specialist <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-moon-astronaut-canada-jeremy-hansen\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-moon-astronaut-canada-jeremy-hansen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jeremy Hansen<\/a>. Glover will be the first Black astronaut ever to fly a moon mission, while Koch will be the first woman and Hansen the first non-American to do so.<\/p>\n<p id=\"3c01d2a4-8a66-480e-b396-55ee9fffc5db\">The tracking request follows previous work for the uncrewed <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-1-going-back-to-the-moon\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-1-going-back-to-the-moon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Artemis 1<\/a> mission in 2022, which saw 10 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-1-tracking-amateur-radio-operators\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-1-tracking-amateur-radio-operators\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">volunteer organizations<\/a> track Orion on its trip to lunar orbit and back. The participants &#8220;attempted to receive Orion&#8217;s signal and use their respective ground antennas to track and measure changes in the radio waves transmitted by Orion,&#8221; NASA stated.<\/p>\n<p>Artemis 2 will serve as a key checkout for NASA&#8217;s larger <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Artemis program<\/a>, which aims to put boots on the moon with the next mission: <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Artemis 3<\/a>. An international crew will touch down using <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SpaceX<\/a>&#8216;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Starship<\/a> lander no earlier than 2027, assuming technical and training milestones are reached.<\/p>\n<p>None of those target dates are set in stone, however.
