The national forecaster has warned of heavy oncoming showers towards the end of the week.\"WXSunday will see heavy rain sweep the country<\/p>\n

The hottest summer on record is a distant memory for Scots now, after the ongoing spell of unsettled weather and heavy rain that has triggered several flood warnings <\/a>across the country over the past few days. And the Met Office is warning that the miserable weather is only to continue this weekend as we enter storm season.<\/p>\n

September 1 marks the beginning of storm season, where the weather<\/a> is more likely to turn violent and wintery. And after the recent unsettled conditions, this weekend is to see a low pressure system move its way across the UK, causing ‘blustery showers’ along with a ‘risk of thunder and hail’, according to the Met Office.<\/p>\n

While there has been speculation that the coming system of showers may become the first named storm <\/a>of the season, which would be Amy, the Met Office has not confirmed that this will be the case. A storm is only named when it has the potential to cause disruption or damage which could result in an amber or red warning, and there has been no confirmation as of yet whether any warnings will be put in place.<\/p>\n

However, that’s not to say that Scots will remain dry this weekend, as the national forecaster has warned of unsettled weather for the rest of the week.<\/p>\n

While it’s still early to say, the Met Office says in its outlook<\/a> for Friday, September 12 to Sunday, September 14: “Remaining changeable with sunny spells and blustery showers, these frequent and occasionally heavy with a risk of hail and thunder.<\/p>\n

“More persistent rain likely arriving on Sunday. Feeling cool.”<\/p>\n

Indeed, the latest data from mapping service WX Charts<\/a> shows a system of rainfall moving across Scotland from the west on Friday from the early hours of the morning.<\/p>\n

While Saturday appears widely dry, Sunday looks to be a total washout according to the map, as a band of heavier rain sweeps eastwards across the country.<\/p>\n

Although we may not see an official storm this weekend, the season has only just begun, and the Met Office<\/a> recently released its list of all the storm names for 2025\/2026, as chosen by the public through the Name our Storms campaign.<\/p>\n
