We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"sc-1uza6dc-1 gunhQQ\">Your support makes all the difference.<\/strong>Read more<\/p>\n<p>A \u00a372,000 salary earned by some striking Tube workers is not enough to buy a house in London, a rail union boss has claimed.<\/p>\n<p>Eddie Dempsey, general secretary of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union, was quizzed over the pay of London Underground workers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/tube-strikes-london-underground-tfl-cost-b2822324.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">amid a week-long strike<\/a>, which has caused<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/travel\/news-and-advice\/tube-strikes-today-london-underground-lines-closed-tfl-rmt-b2822806.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> severe disruption<\/a> in the capital.<\/p>\n<p>When asked on Times Radio on Wednesday if he thought \u00a372,000 meant a worker was not well paid, Mr Dempsey replied: &#8220;Well, you can&#8217;t afford to buy a house in London, even on \u00a372,000.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>RMT members are taking part in the walk-out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/business\/rmt-london-docklands-light-railway-london-underground-data-b2823692.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in a dispute <\/a>over pay and hours \u2013 with many Tube lines out of service, or heavily impacted by the industrial action.<\/p>\n<p>According to Transport for London (TfL), the average Tube driver <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/tube-strike-tfl-driver-salaries-how-much-b2823015.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has a starting salary<\/a> of \u00a371,160, while station staff start on \u00a335,270, rising to \u00a344,140 within a few months.<\/p>\n<p>The salaries of RMT members, who are also demanding a reduced four-day working week, has added to the frustration faced by some in the city who have been disrupted by the strike.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/a22d948d97f4e267e22060fdf7cf63b2Y29udGVudHNlYXJjaGFwaSwxNzQxMzQxNDMz-2.68058799.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Eddie Dempsey has said there had been a \u2018collapse\u2019 in industrial relations which he warned could lead to more industrial action (Aaron Chown\/PA)\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/p>\n<p>open image in gallery<\/p>\n<p>Eddie Dempsey has said there had been a \u2018collapse\u2019 in industrial relations which he warned could lead to more industrial action (Aaron Chown\/PA) (PA Archive)<\/p>\n<p>The city\u2019s economy is<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/tube-strikes-london-underground-tfl-cost-b2822324.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> set to suffer<\/a> a direct hit worth at least \u00a3230m, according to research by the London-based Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR). <\/p>\n<p>Mr Dempsey told Times Radio he would not be drawn to answer whether a \u00a372,000 salary earned by some workers meant they were already well paid.<\/p>\n<p>However, he said it was not enough to buy a house in London, where the average price in June was \u00a3561,000, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/visualisations\/housingpriceslocal\/E09000033\/#house_price\">according<\/a> to the Office of National Statistics.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Dempsey said: \u201cI think workers should be able to afford to live in London. And we often get people in the media attacking us for having wages that most people in Britain have lost. So we make no apologies for that. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe understand the disruptions are a real pain for people. We take no pleasure in it.
