Three wins from three have once again set the tone for a side intent on defending their title. The goals of Hugo Ekitike have provided fireworks, Alexander Isak has added power and depth, but the heartbeat of this Liverpool team is found in midfield, where Alexis Mac Allister continues to be the quiet conductor of their play.

That is why any whisper of an injury worry for the Argentine causes unease on Merseyside. Liverpool fans will have been reassured by an update from Argentina’s national team coach Lionel Scaloni. “Regarding the presence of Mac Allister, the coach admitted that the midfielder isn’t 100 per cent fit, but hinted that he’ll be among the starters because he’s fine,” he said in quotes relayed by ESPN Argentina.

Mac Allister’s importance is hard to overstate. Praised as “superb” by Alan Shearer and Glenn Murray, his range of passing and relentless work rate have made him one of Arne Slot’s most influential players. Signed for just £35 million from Brighton, he has been a bargain that now feels central to Liverpool’s system.

Without him, Liverpool lose fluency in possession. Curtis Jones can fill the role and performs admirably, but he does not quite replicate Mac Allister’s ability to dictate tempo and break lines with one pass. It is why Slot has been careful in his use of the midfielder, trying to strike the right balance between managing his fitness and getting the best from him.

Liverpool’s injury issues at right-back have already forced creative solutions, with Dominik Szoboszlai deployed as a stand-in. That experiment has worked so far, but the midfield is far less forgiving. A prolonged absence for Mac Allister would be much harder to absorb, particularly with Liverpool juggling domestic and European commitments.

This is why Scaloni’s decision to keep him involved internationally is a double-edged sword. It is encouraging to know he is close to full fitness, but Liverpool will hope his minutes are carefully managed.

With Burnley up next, Slot will want his midfield general available. Mac Allister’s energy and vision will be vital against a side likely to sit deep. His presence also frees up Florian Wirtz and Dominik Szoboszlai to push higher up the pitch, making Liverpool’s attack even more dangerous.

For now, the message is one of cautious optimism. Mac Allister may not be at 100 per cent, but he is close enough to play, and for Liverpool that could make all the difference in maintaining early momentum in the Premier League.

Liverpool’s start to the Premier League campaign has been almost flawless.
