There is a launch pad with a launch tower on a flat area of land above sheer cliffs to the sea below.\" class=\"sc-86c96223-0 fHZDyi\"\/>PA Media<\/p>\n<p>Shetland&#8217;s SaxaVord is the Scottish spaceport at the most advanced stage of development, say MPs<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">MPs have warned that Scotland is at risk of falling behind in the race to launch the first satellites from western Europe into Earth&#8217;s orbit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Westminster&#8217;s Scottish Affairs Committee has urged the UK government to put more investment into the development of Scottish spaceports, <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c3r4n7qd5yzo\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 jZoZnB\" rel=\"noopener\">including Saxavord in Shetland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Scotland is considered to be suitable for launches due to its position in the world&#8217;s northern hemisphere, and access to the North Atlantic&#8217;s &#8220;low-traffic&#8221; airspace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The UK government&#8217;s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) said it had invested \u00a396m into the Scottish space sector, <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-scotland-highlands-islands-61379577\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 jZoZnB\" rel=\"noopener\">including money for Forres-based rockets manufacturer Orbex<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">In 2021, the prime minister at the time, Boris Johnson, <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/newsround\/58720879\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 jZoZnB\" rel=\"noopener\">committed to launching a space rocket from the UK by the following year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">So far, a rocket has not been successfully launched into orbit from the UK &#8211; or western Europe &#8211; according to the Scottish Affairs Committee&#8217;s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/committees.parliament.uk\/publications\/49347\/documents\/262798\/default\/\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 jZoZnB\" rel=\"noopener\">new report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The group of MPs said Scotland had the potential to be a global leader in terms of small satellite launches, but it added that investment was lacking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">They said a site in Norway was now likely to beat Scotland to the first launch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The committee has called for increased financial support from the UK government, and for it to become a customer of domestic launch services.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Launch revolution&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Committee chairwoman and Labour MP for Glasgow West, Patricia Ferguson, said: &#8220;Scotland has real potential to become a leader in space launch, which space ports such as SaxaVord in Shetland are well-placed to seize. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">&#8220;The economic benefits of this would be huge, but it&#8217;s a time-sensitive opportunity we&#8217;re in danger of missing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">She added: &#8220;We&#8217;re urging the UK government to commit to sustained financial backing of the sector, and move towards long-term, co-ordinated investment that can match the fantastic ambition and momentum demonstrated by the sector.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">DSIT said it was providing investment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">A spokesperson said: &#8220;We are backing Scotland&#8217;s exceptional potential to lead Europe&#8217;s space launch revolution. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">&#8220;Their spaceport, innovative rocket manufacturers, and unrivalled geographical advantages positions Scotland at the forefront of the launch sector.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">They added: &#8220;We are supporting this vital sector through sustained investment that matches the scale of this opportunity and have invested \u00a396m into the Scottish launch sector, including \u00a320m into Forres-based Orbex earlier this year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Where are Scotland&#8217;s spaceports?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1757510351_36_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-86c96223-0 iMuqLZ hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/96cce6f0-d350-11ef-94cb-5f844ceb9e30.png.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Map showing SaxaVord Spaceport in Unst one of the Shetland islands.  It's location on a map of the UK is also highlighted\" class=\"sc-86c96223-0 fHZDyi\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Five sites across Scotland have been identified as possible spaceports, but the Scottish Affairs Committee said of them Shetland&#8217;s SaxaVord site was at the most advanced stage of development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Last month, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) granted a licence allowing Scottish firm Skyrora to launch from the SaxaVord.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Proposed spaceports include Spaceport 1 at Scolpaig in North Uist in the Western Isles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\"><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-scotland-highlands-islands-66301096\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 jZoZnB\" rel=\"noopener\">In July 2023<\/a>, the Scottish government decided not to call-in plans for the facility from the Western Isles Council &#8211; Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The project at the time had received 244 individual public responses opposing the plans, including a petition with almost 1,000 signatures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The government&#8217;s decision meant the comhairle could continue working towards building the spaceport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Sutherland Spaceport, near Tongue on the north Highland coast,<a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c786nyw9pl3o\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 jZoZnB\" rel=\"noopener\"> is in limbo after rockets firm Orbex paused construction last December<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Machrihanish in Argyll and Prestwick in South Ayrshire have also been identified as having potential for hosting space flights in the future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"PA Media Shetland&#8217;s SaxaVord is the Scottish spaceport at the most advanced stage of development, say MPs MPs&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":413859,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3844],"tags":[70,413,16,15],"class_list":{"0":"post-413858","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-space","8":"tag-science","9":"tag-space","10":"tag-uk","11":"tag-united-kingdom"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/115181551173040270","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/413858","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=413858"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/413858\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/413859"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=413858"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=413858"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=413858"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
