{"id":414280,"date":"2025-09-10T22:50:18","date_gmt":"2025-09-10T22:50:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/414280\/"},"modified":"2025-09-10T22:50:18","modified_gmt":"2025-09-10T22:50:18","slug":"nato-scrambles-jets-to-shoot-down-russian-drones-in-poland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/414280\/","title":{"rendered":"NATO scrambles jets to shoot down Russian drones in Poland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>WHY THIS MATTERS:<\/b> Polish airspace has been violated several times since Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, but there has been <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-nato-members-borders-airspace-violations-4a7d6c3eabf76c82ebaff434401b3331\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nothing on the scale<\/a> of Wednesday\u2019s violations in Poland or in any other NATO country.<\/p>\n<p>WOHYN, Poland (AP) \u2014 Multiple Russian drones crossed into <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/poland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Poland<\/a> in what European officials described Wednesday as a deliberate provocation, causing <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/nato\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NATO<\/a> to send fighter jets to shoot them down. A NATO spokesman said it was the first time the alliance confronted a potential threat in its airspace.<\/p>\n<p>The incursion, which occurred during a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/russia-ukraine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wave of strikes by the Kremlin on Ukraine<\/a>, and the NATO response swiftly raised fears that <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/russia-ukraine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the war<\/a> could spill over \u2014 a fear that has been growing in Europe as Russia steps up its attacks and peace efforts go nowhere.<\/p>\n<p>Poland requested an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council on the drone incursion. South Korea\u2019s U.N. Mission, which holds the council presidency this month, said the time was being discussed.<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s Defense Ministry said it did not target Poland, while Belarus, a close ally of Moscow, said it tracked some drones that \u201clost their course\u201d because they were jammed.<\/p>\n<p>However, several European leaders said they believed <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/poland-nato-russia-drones-war-ukraine-9477afff4fc963fbe95f4e829f246d21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the incursion<\/a> amounted to an intentional expansion of Russia\u2019s assault against Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRussia\u2019s war is escalating, not ending,\u201d European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas told reporters in Brussels. \u201cWhat (Russian President Vladimir) Putin wants to do is to test us. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk told parliament 19 violations were recorded over seven hours, but he said information was still being gathered. Polish authorities said nine crash sites were found, with some of them hundreds of kilometers from the border.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are definitely no grounds to suspect that this was a course correction mistake or the like,\u201d German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius told parliament. \u201cThese drones were very clearly put on this course deliberately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dutch fighter jets came to Poland\u2019s aid and intercepted some drones. Earlier, Defense Minister W\u0142adys\u0142aw Kosiniak-Kamysz wrote on X that more than 10 objects crossed into Polish airspace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is new, in the worst sense of the word, is the direction from which the drones came. This is the first time in this war that they did not come from Ukraine as a result of errors or minor Russian provocations. For the first time, a significant portion of the drones came directly from Belarus,\u201d Tusk said in parliament.<\/p>\n<p>The Russian Defense Ministry said its overnight strikes targeted Ukraine\u2019s military-industrial complex in the western regions of the country \u2014 which border Poland \u2014 with no planned targets on Polish territory.<\/p>\n<p>In an unusual message of outreach, the ministry said it was ready to hold consultations with Poland\u2019s Defense Ministry.<\/p>\n<p>Belarusian Maj. Gen. Pavel Muraveiko, the chief of the country\u2019s general staff and first deputy defense minister, appeared to try to put some distance between his country and the incursion.<\/p>\n<p>In an online statement, he said that as Russia and Ukraine traded drone strikes overnight, Belarusian air defense forces tracked \u201cdrones that lost their course\u201d after they were jammed, adding that Belarusian forces warned their Polish and Lithuanian counterparts about \u201cunidentified aircraft\u201d approaching their territory.<\/p>\n<p>A house was hit in the village of Wyryki in the Lublin region near the Ukrainian border, Mayor Bernard Blaszczuk told the TVP Info television news channel. Martin O\u2019Donnell called \u201cthe first time NATO planes have engaged potential threats in Allied airspace.\u201d That included the Dutch F-35 fighter jets that intercepted drones, according to Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans.<\/p>\n<p>The alliance \u201cis committed to defending every kilometer of NATO territory, including our airspace,\u201d O\u2019Donnell said.<\/p>\n<p>Tusk told parliament that consultations took place under <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nato-poland-russia-ukraine-drones-article4-658921ca98eff77e39345041ba0900a3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Article 4 of the NATO treaty<\/a> \u2014 a clause that allows countries to call for urgent discussions with their allies. The consultations happened Wednesday at a previously planned meeting. (Chancellery of the Prime Minister of Poland via AP)<\/p>\n<p>Read More<\/p>\n<p>Mark Lyall Grant, U.K. national security adviser from 2015 to 2017, said the incursion was an obvious escalation of Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine, but there was not yet enough evidence to say it was an attack on a NATO member.<\/p>\n<p>But many European leaders expressed deep concern, including those in the Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia that are the NATO members most nervous about Russian aggression.<\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called it an \u201cextremely dangerous precedent for Europe\u201d and called for Russia to \u201cfeel the consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoscow always tests the limits of what is possible and, if it does not encounter a strong response, remains at a new level of escalation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>By midday in Washington, U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s only public comments about the incursion was a short post on social media: \u201cWhat\u2019s with Russia violating Poland\u2019s airspace with drones? Here we go!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump was set to speak later Wednesday to Polish President Karol Nawrocki, according to a White House official who was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n<p>Phillips O\u2019Brien, professor of strategic studies at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, said the incident underscored the failure of NATO member states to accurately assess the threat posed by Russia and properly prepare for war.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNATO states, even front line ones, have clearly not prepared for war of the type that is happening now,\u201d he said in his Substack newsletter. <\/p>\n<p>Poland has complained about Russian objects entering its airspace during attacks on Ukraine before.<\/p>\n<p>In August, Poland\u2019s defense minister said that a flying object that crashed and exploded in a cornfield in eastern Poland was <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/poland-crash-explosion-unidentified-flying-object-84f14e0b36271ad64cc4929751602f2b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">identified as a Russian drone<\/a>, and called it a provocation.<\/p>\n<p>In March, Poland <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-missile-airspace-violation-c9d2511f169e9f80a08082726c118114\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scrambled jets<\/a> after a Russian missile briefly passed through Polish airspace on its way to a target in western Ukraine. And in 2022, a missile that was likely fired by Ukraine to intercept a Russian attack landed in Poland, killing two people.<\/p>\n<p>Russian attacks hit central and western Ukraine<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Ukrainian air force said Russia fired 415 strike and decoy drones, as well as 42 cruise missiles and one ballistic missile overnight.<\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian air defenses intercepted or jammed 386 drones and 27 cruise missiles, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>One person was killed and at least five wounded, while several homes and businesses were damaged, according to local officials. <\/p>\n<p>The Russian Defense Ministry said in its morning report Wednesday that it had destroyed 122 Ukrainian drones over various Russian regions overnight, including over the illegally annexed Crimea and areas of the Black Sea.<\/p>\n<p>___<\/p>\n<p>Ciobanu reported from Warsaw, Poland.
