It&#8217;s Not the First Time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color min-h-[6.375rem] lg:min-h-[4.75rem] dropcap text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">The latest mural drop by graffiti artist <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/tag\/banksy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Banksy<\/a>, which appeared on the side of the Royal Courts of Justice building in central London over the weekend, has been scrubbed away by court authorities\u2014never to be seen again.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">The mural depicted a judge in a traditional white wig and black robe striking a protester with his gavel as the protester\u2019s sign is marked with Banksy\u2019s signature blood spatters. <\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mb-0 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">The pseudonymous England-based artist posted the picture to his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/banksy\/p\/DOVoHlVDMIU\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Instagram<\/a> with a caption that read simply \u201cRoyal Courts Of Justice. London.\u201d It was seen as a commentary on a newly passed law banning support for <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7307480\/palestine-action-protest-united-kingdom-london-police-arrests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Palestine Action<\/a>, which has drawn criticism from rights groups and legal experts over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/press-releases\/2025\/07\/un-experts-urge-united-kingdom-not-misuse-terrorism-laws-against-protest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">free speech concerns<\/a>. Some 900 people were arrested at a protest in London against the law just two days before Banksy&#8217;s new mural appeared.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\"><strong>Read More:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/3526064\/banksy-street-art-world-gallery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">See Banksy\u2019s Art From Around the World<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">Although Banksy didn\u2019t reference the Palestine Action protests directly, he has a history of using his art to highlight the Palestinian cause. He has created several works in the West Bank and Gaza, and owns a hotel in Bethlehem overlooking the Israeli separation wall that runs through Palestinian territory, which he said offers the \u201cworst view in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">Once Banksy\u2019s Royal Courts mural was discovered, law enforcement swiftly covered the painting with sheets of plastic and barriers, only for it to be later scrubbed away by a masked worker. HM Courts and Tribunals Service, which runs the court, said in a statement that the 143-year-old complex \u201cis a listed building and HMCTS are obliged to maintain its original character.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mb-0 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">This is not the first time that Banksy&#8217;s priceless artworks have been destroyed. Over the years, many works have been painted over by overzealous municipal workers, stolen by members of the public, or chipped away from the wall to be sold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">Here are some of the other Banksy works that were lost.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A building demolished<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">A Banksy mural three stories high on the side of a building in the coastal town of Dover was painted over and then brought down with the building it was on when it was demolished in November 2023. <\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">The painting depicted a worker chipping away at a star on the flag of the European Union (EU) and was unveiled in 2017, shortly after the <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5601982\/how-brexit-broke-britain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United Kingdom decided to leave the EU<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">The mural was whitewashed over in August 2019, covering the artwork. Gareth Fuller\u2014PA via Getty ImagesSending a message <\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">The nature of Banksy\u2019s artworks\u2014mostly illegal graffiti murals created without permits\u2014makes them inherently vulnerable to removal by disapproving local governments. <\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">This occurred in 2008, when Banksy\u2019s 2007 mural \u201cOne Nation Under CCTV\u201d was ordered for removal by the Westminster City Council of London, which said it was created without a permit and might be seen as encouraging other unauthorized graffiti. <\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">\u201cIf you condone this, then you condone graffiti all over London,\u201d the BBC reported that Robert Davis, the council\u2019s deputy leader, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mb-0 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">The artist provided an<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/archive\/6909375\/banksy-defends-his-guerrilla-graffiti-art\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> exclusive statement to TIME Magazine<\/a> responding to the council&#8217;s decision at the time:  \u201cI don\u2019t know what next door is complaining about \u2014 their building is so ugly the \u2018No Trespassing\u2019 sign reads like an insult,\u201d he said, referring to Royal Mail, which was a tenant of the building that has sought the mural\u2019s removal.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"fill\" class=\"absolute inset-0 h-full w-full object-cover\" style=\"position:absolute;height:100%;width:100%;left:0;top:0;right:0;bottom:0;color:transparent\"   src=\"https:\/\/time.com\/redesign\/_next\/image\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.time.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2025%2F09%2FBanksy-Split-2.png&amp;w=3840&amp;q=75\"\/>On the left, Banksy&#8217;s 23-ft high mural in the yard of a Royal Mail depot in Newman Street, central London, which was seen as a commentary on surveillance in the United Kingdom. The theft was in plain sight, as photographs documented two men with a boltcutter running off with the sign.
