Earlier this month, the <a href=\"https:\/\/transport.ec.europa.eu\/news-events\/news\/commission-welcomes-code-conduct-reliable-online-reviews-tourism-accommodation-2025-09-01_en\" ek-link=\"true\" title=\"endorsed by the European Commission earlier this month\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Commission also endorsed the code of conduct<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The new code of conduct is directed at improved transparency and online review reliability for consumers and travel businesses. The code was initiated by the EU and then created in collaboration with travel stakeholders, according to the EU, which said accommodation providers and platforms played a large role.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis code of conduct, drafted collaboratively through extensive discussions with accommodation providers\u2019 and consumers\u2019 organizations and the European Commission, will promote the trustworthiness of review systems, for the benefit of all stakeholders,\u201d said Emmanuel Mounier, secretary general of Eu Travel Tech.<\/p>\n<p>\tGet a dose of digital travel in your inbox each day<\/p>\n<p>Subscribe to our newsletter below<\/p>\n<p>The news comes on the heels of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phocuswire.com\/tripadvisor-fraudulent-reviews-2145479969\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">Tripadvisor\u2019s removal of 2.7 million fraudulent reviews in 2024<\/a>, following its removal of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phocuswire.com\/Tripadvisor-blocks-record-2-million-fake-reviews-in-2023\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">2 million in 2023<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phocuswire.com\/tripadvisor-fraudent-reviews-report\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">1.2 million in 2022<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Brad Young, general counsel for Tripadvisor, said the company was thrilled to partner with Eu Travel Tech, the European Commission, HOTREC (the umbrella association representing the hospitality sector in Europe) and other industry partners on the endorsement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe integrity of reviews on our platforms is crucial to maintaining the trust of our users, and this code will help support our fight against fake reviews and review brokers operating across the internet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maria Rocha Barros, SVP and chief legal and public affairs officer at Booking.com, said her team was proud to endorse the code.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that authentic guest reviews build trust, empower consumers and bring transparency to the travel ecosystem,\u201d she said. \u201cMany of the practices now enshrined in the EU\u2019s Code of Conduct have long been part of our own approach.
