While there\u2019s been a lot of emphasis on colorectal cancer screenings, many people also want to do what they can to lower the risk of developing this form of cancer in the first place. Now, new research suggests that your vitamin D levels may play a role in how likely you are to develop colorectal cancer. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"3\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">And, as <a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminD-HealthProfessional\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminD-HealthProfessional\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"18%\" data-node-id=\"3.1\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">18%<\/a> of Americans have inadequate vitamin D levels, the findings are eyebrow-raising. Of course, colorectal cancer is a complicated disease, and it\u2019s hard to say that low vitamin D alone would cause someone to develop it. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">Vitamin D deficiency and colorectal cancer have been linked in the past. One <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29912394\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29912394\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"study\" data-node-id=\"11.1\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> of more than 12,000 people found that those who have lower levels of vitamin D in their blood had a 31% higher risk of developing colorectal cancer than those with better vitamin D levels.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">Another <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34200111\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34200111\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"study\" data-node-id=\"12.1\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> found that people who had high levels of vitamin D in their diet had a 25% lower risk of developing colorectal cancer. Data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4981802\/#:~:text=Results.,with%20decreased%20risk%20of%20CRC.\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4981802\/#:~:text=Results.,with%20decreased%20risk%20of%20CRC.\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Nurses\u2019 Health Study\" data-node-id=\"12.3\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Nurses\u2019 Health Study<\/a> also discovered that women with the highest vitamin D intake had a 58% lower risk of developing colorectal cancer compared with people who had lower levels of vitamin D.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">\u201cThese findings are reinforced by a substantial body of epidemiological data, making vitamin D one of the most biologically plausible and extensively studied nutritional factors in colorectal cancer risk reduction,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/faculty.mdanderson.org\/profiles\/veronika_fedirko.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/faculty.mdanderson.org\/profiles\/veronika_fedirko.html\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Veronika Fedirko, Ph.D.\" data-node-id=\"13.1\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Veronika Fedirko, Ph.D.<\/a>, associate professor of cancer prevention at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. \u201cWhile some randomized clinical trials have shown mixed results\u2014often due to factors such as dosage, timing, or baseline vitamin D concentrations\u2014the association demonstrated in observational studies remains consistent and strongly supported by biological evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"14.0\">Why might vitamin D deficiency raise the risk of colorectal cancer?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">There are a few things that could be behind this, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.memorialcare.org\/providers\/wael-harb\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.memorialcare.org\/providers\/wael-harb\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Wael Harb, M.D\" data-node-id=\"15.1\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Wael Harb, M.D<\/a>., a medical oncologist at MemorialCare Cancer Institute at Orange Coast and Saddleback Medical Centers in Orange County, CA. A big factor is that vitamin D impacts your immune system, he says. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">\u201cVitamin D modulates immune responses,\u201d he says. Specifically, vitamin D interacts with the vitamin D receptor (VDR), which is in colon tissue, explains Scott Keatley, R.D., of <a href=\"https:\/\/keatleymnt.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/keatleymnt.com\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Keatley Medical Nutrition Therapy\" data-node-id=\"16.1\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Keatley Medical Nutrition Therapy<\/a>. \u201cWhen activated, VDR can influence gene expression related to cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis, which are all central processes in cancer development,\u201d he says. \u201cLow vitamin D levels may weaken these protective effects, allowing abnormal cells in the colon to survive and multiply.\u201d<br data-node-id=\"16.3\"\/><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"17\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">Vitamin D may also help reduce inflammation in the body (and gut), \u201cwhich could potentially impact tumor development,\u201d Dr. Harb says. On the flip side, having lower levels of vitamin D can let inflammation in your intestines go unchecked, raising the risk that colorectal cancer will develop, he explains. <br data-node-id=\"17.1\"\/><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">\u201cWhile vitamin D is not a substitute for screening or a healthy lifestyle, it is an important and relatively modifiable factor worth paying attention to\u2014especially in individuals at higher risk of deficiency, such as older adults, people with limited sun exposure, those with darker skin, or individuals with chronic illnesses,\u201d says M\u00f3nika Fekete, Ph.D., lead study author and professor in the Institute of Preventive Medicine and Public Health at Semmelweis University.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"19.0\">How much vitamin D do you need?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"20\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">The recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamin D varies by person and age, but most adults should get 600 international units (IU) daily, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminD-HealthProfessional\/#h4\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminD-HealthProfessional\/#h4\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"National Institutes of Health\" data-node-id=\"20.1\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Institutes of Health<\/a> (NIH). Adults aged 70 and up should have 800 IU of vitamin D, per the NIH. <\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"21.0\">How do I know if I\u2019m getting enough vitamin D?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"22\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">There are a few symptoms that can suggest you\u2019re low on vitamin D. That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to ask your doctor about checking your vitamin D levels. \u201cA blood test is the most reliable way to get a sense of whether you have adequate vitamin D levels,\u201d Cording says. <\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"25.0\">How to get enough vitamin D<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"26\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">Most people get vitamin D from exposure to the sun, but you can also get it from foods. The biggest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prevention.com\/food-nutrition\/g20506205\/12-foods-high-in-vitamin-d\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.prevention.com\/food-nutrition\/g20506205\/12-foods-high-in-vitamin-d\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"food sources of vitamin D\" data-node-id=\"26.1\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">food sources of vitamin D<\/a> are cod liver oil, trout, salmon, mushrooms, fortified milk, and fortified cereal, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminD-HealthProfessional\/#h4\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminD-HealthProfessional\/#h4\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"NIH\" data-node-id=\"26.3\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">NIH<\/a>. However, Cording says that some people can benefit from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prevention.com\/food-nutrition\/g35686472\/best-vitamin-d-supplements\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.prevention.com\/food-nutrition\/g35686472\/best-vitamin-d-supplements\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"vitamin D supplement\" data-node-id=\"26.5\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">vitamin D supplement<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"27\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">Dr. Harb says we aren\u2019t at the level yet in colorectal cancer prevention of recommending that everyone take a vitamin D supplement. However, he says that your vitamin D levels should be checked during your annual check-up to make sure they\u2019re OK.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"28\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">\u201cTesting is especially important if you have limited sun exposure or frequent use of sunscreen (which is important for skin cancer prevention), darker skin, digestive disorders, chronic health conditions, older age, or are overweight or obese,\u201d Dr. Fedirko says. \u201cThe test is simple and can be arranged through your healthcare provider.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"29\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">If your levels of vitamin D are low, Keatley recommends looking for supplements with vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). \u201cIt\u2019s more effective at raising blood levels than D2,\u201d he says. A dose of 1,000\u20132,000 IU daily is common, per Keatley, but it\u2019s important to talk to your doctor about dosing recommendations before taking a vitamin D supplement. <\/p>\n<p><a
