{"id":415778,"date":"2025-09-11T12:34:13","date_gmt":"2025-09-11T12:34:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/415778\/"},"modified":"2025-09-11T12:34:13","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T12:34:13","slug":"ukraine-slated-to-get-skyranger-drone-defense-cannons-by-years-end","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/415778\/","title":{"rendered":"Ukraine slated to get Skyranger drone-defense cannons by year\u2019s end"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">BERLIN \u2014 German arms giant Rheinmetall is poised to deliver its Skyranger short-range air defense system to Ukraine by the end of the year, according to the company\u2019s chief executive. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdfheute.de\/wirtschaft\/unternehmen\/rheinmetall-armin-papperger-ukraine-drohnenangriff-100.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a> German public media earlier in the week that a contract to that effect would be signed on Wednesday at the DSEI defense expo in the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">As of late morning Thursday, a deal had yet to be announced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The contract will be worth hundreds of millions of dollars, Papperger told broadcaster ZDF on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2024\/02\/28\/germany-buys-rheinmetalls-skyranger-to-reinstate-mobile-air-defenses\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Skyranger system<\/a> is a short-range air defense turret that can be mounted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2024\/02\/26\/austrian-pandur-vehicles-to-schlep-slimmed-skyranger-air-defense-gun\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on a variety of<\/a> vehicle bases, including older tanks. Its 35-millimeter cannon can cover an area of 16 square kilometers, or six square miles, and is particularly useful in intercepting low-flying objects, such as drones. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cEach of these systems can cover four by four kilometers to be completely drone-free,\u201d Papperger told German broadcaster ZDF. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Germany has been Ukraine\u2019s most significant European backer since the start of the invasion. The D\u00fcsseldorf-based arms giant Rheinmetall <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rheinmetall.com\/en\/media\/stories\/2023\/rheinmetall-a-powerful-partner-at-ukraine-side%5C\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has said<\/a> it considers itself Ukraine\u2019s \u201cmost important defense industry partner in the fight against Russian aggression.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Alongside main battle tanks, armored fighting vehicles and ammunition of various types, the company has also sent other air defense systems of the Gepard and Skynex varieties to Kyiv in the past. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__BioWrapper-sc-cy7r53-0 eATlTY a-body2\">Linus H\u00f6ller is Defense News&#8217; Europe correspondent and OSINT investigator.
