{"id":415930,"date":"2025-09-11T13:51:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-11T13:51:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/415930\/"},"modified":"2025-09-11T13:51:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T13:51:10","slug":"east-ren-council-vows-to-oppose-glasgow-congestion-charge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/415930\/","title":{"rendered":"East Ren Council vows to oppose Glasgow congestion charge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/news\/25438448.report-glasgow-city-council-golden-goodbyes-published\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Glasgow City Council<\/a>\u00a0(GCC) has mooted imposing a charge on drivers entering the city, which would hit people travelling from East and West Dunbartonshire, North and\u00a0South Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire, and the rest of Scotland\u2019s 32 local authorities.\u00a0\u00a0\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    Glasgow residents would be exempt from the fee, though\u00a0users of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/life_style\/23258882.clyde-tunnel-glasgow-icon-built-human-cost\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Clyde Tunnel<\/a> could be hit with the\u00a0additional road tax.\u00a0\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    East Renfrewshire Council unanimously backed a motion brought forward by Councillor Gordon Wallace opposing the introduction of a congestion charge by their city neighbour on Wednesday.\u00a0\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    <img   alt=\"Glasgow would follow London's lead in introducing the charge \" style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>Glasgow would follow London&#8217;s lead in introducing the charge (Image: NQ) The motion urged the leader of the Council to write to GCC, COSLA, and the Scottish Government, making East Renfrewshire Council\u2019s position clear.\u00a0\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    It also called for a briefing paper to be prepared on the financial and social impacts on East Renfrewshire residents a congestion charge would bring. \u00a0\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    <strong>Read More:<\/strong>\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    Councillor Wallace said: \u201cThe Council has taken a clear position \u2014 now it is about making sure that position is acted upon. \u00a0\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    \u201cOur residents and businesses deserve to know that East Renfrewshire will not simply absorb costs from policies made in Glasgow, and that we are pressing for the real solution: progress on Clyde Metro.\u201d\u00a0\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    A GCC council spokesperson said:\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s a key element of our Transport Strategy to promote sustainable transport throughout the city, and whilst we\u00a0do not control the running or delivery of public transport, we are working closely with partners to develop the Clyde Metro proposals and secure improvements to\u00a0the city\u2019s public transport infrastructure.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    \u201cHaving fully explored Workplace Parking Licensing, we have no plans to take this forward at this time.
