Arsenal<\/a> did the best business during the summer transfer window despite Premier League title rivals Liverpool<\/a> shattering the British record by luring Alexander Isak to Anfield from Newcastle United<\/a> on deadline day, GIVEMESPORT senior reporter Fabrizio Romano<\/a> has claimed on the latest episode of our Market Madness podcast.<\/p>\n

The Gunners’ recruitment drive was led by sporting director Andrea Berta, with the north Londoners spending more than \u00a3250million on high-profile reinforcements<\/a> before the September 1 cut-off point, improving boss Mikel Arteta’s hopes of getting his hands on silverware this season.<\/p>\n

Although Liverpool were not afraid to splash the cash during the summer, Romano has insisted that Arsenal pulled off greater deals ahead of the deadline. When asked which Premier League side had the best transfer window during an appearance on our Market Madness podcast, the respected Italian journalist said<\/a>:<\/p>\n

“Arsenal. I think Arsenal did a fantastic job.”<\/p>\n

Liverpool spent \u00a3446million on fresh faces<\/a> during the summer, shattering the record for the highest amount spent by a Premier League side in a single transfer window, but Arsenal also showed ambition as they went in search of upgrading their squad after missing out on silverware last season.<\/p>\n

The Gunners brought in a new first-choice striker in the form of Viktor Gyokeres, thanks to reaching a \u00a363.5million agreement<\/a> with Primeira Liga heavyweights Sporting, while they also spent big in order to win the race to sign attacking midfielder Eberechi Eze from domestic counterparts Crystal Palace.<\/p>\n

Arsenal hijacked arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur’s move<\/a> for the England international, when it initially appeared that he was heading for the other half of north London, which came after Arteta had already bolstered his attacking options with the acquisition of Noni Madueke from Chelsea.<\/p>\n

Martin Zubimendi was another big-money recruit, after completing a \u00a360million move<\/a> from boyhood club Real Sociedad, allowing the Gunners to have further solidity in front of the backline. Christian Norgaard, an additional defensive-minded midfielder, also headed to the Emirates Stadium after Brentford were raided.<\/p>\n

Piero Hincapie was a late signing, with the Ecuador international leaving Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen on a season-long loan which includes a \u00a345million option for Arsenal to buy<\/a>, while Kepa Arrizabalaga and Cristhian Mosquera were landed from Chelsea and Valencia respectively.<\/p>\n

Some of the strain on the wage bill was alleviated thanks to selling Nuno Tavares, Marquinhos and Albert Sambi Lokonga, while Jakub Kiwior, Fabio Vieira, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Reiss Nelson and Karl Hein departed on loan. Thomas Partey, Jorginho and Kieran Tierney left at the end of their respective contracts.<\/p>\n
