A much loved family-run shop in Cardiff <\/a>that people from across the city and beyond visit could be demolished to make way for two houses. Cardiff Council<\/a>\u2019s website shows that plans to demolish Deri Stores in Wenallt Road, Rhiwbina, are currently in the consultation phase.<\/p>\n

The shop itself, described online as being \u201cgreat for plants, fruit, veg and small grocery items\u201d has been part of the community in Rhiwbina <\/a>for decades.<\/p>\n

However it\u2019s also well known by many from outside the area with one local councillor saying people from across Cardiff<\/a> and beyond go there for its \u201clegendary\u201d Christmas<\/a> trees. Never miss a Cardiff story and sign up for our newsletter here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Conservative Cardiff Council<\/a> ward councillor for Rhiwbina, Cllr Jayne Cowan, said: \u201cIt\u2019s an institution in Rhiwbina and we\u2019ve had so many people contact us \u2013 you can imagine.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are no shops at all in Pantmawr anymore.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey went a number of years ago so if it\u2019s snowing or the weather<\/a> is bad people can walk to Deri Stores.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlso\u2013 as a small provision, they deliver to people locally who can\u2019t walk.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Christmas trees are legendary from there. People come from across the city and beyond to buy their Christmas trees and the quality plants.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it would be a massive loss to Rhiwbina and the surrounding areas if it goes.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me personally, I would love for it to be taken over as a going concern by somebody else.\u201d<\/p>\n

The closing date for the live public consultation on plans to knock down Deri Stores is Tuesday, September 23.<\/p>\n

Cllr Cowan has urged local residents to share their opinions on the planning application.<\/p>\n

The buildings proposed for demolition include the existing building at 1 Wenallt Road, including the shop contained within, and the associated shop building adjacent.<\/p>\n

A social media post put up recently by Cllr Cowan notifying residents about the planning application gained dozens of reactions and comments.<\/p>\n

Many residents expressed their sadness at the proposed demolition of the shop with one saying it is the \u201cbest place for flowers, plants, and Christmas trees\u201d and another saying they were \u201cso sorry\u201d to hear the shop might go.<\/p>\n

There are also a number of comments on the council\u2019s website showing support for the proposal.<\/p>\n

One comment, which is anonymous, simply reads: \u201cHaving seen the full details of the application I wish to confirm that I am able to support the application.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The family-run Deri Stores has been in Rhiwbina for decades.
